Part of my dissertation project involved reconstructing 500+ million year old caspase proteins using a phlyogenetic technique called ancestral state reconstruction. Each of the 11 human caspases evolved discrete regulatory mechanisms, if I can determine how they evolved, then we can design drugs that regulate their activity.
