Gentle Giants of Luang Prabang

in #steemsummit7 years ago (edited)

Laos or also called Lan Xang is the Land of Million Elephants. Or that was what it was years ago. Now there are only about 700 wild elephants and 400 domesticated elephants in Laos.

After visiting the magnificent Kuang Si Falls, the new friends who I just met that day were all taking about their awesome visit to an elephant camp. I myself wondered if I will be able to visit one since I was pressed for time. And coincidentally, we passed by the KUANG SI ELEPHANT CAMP that was just along the way from the falls. We immediately asked the tuktuk driver to drop me off.

Who would have known right? I guess I was really meant toexperience the real Laos.

So this camp that I went to have 12 elephants. Each one has a history of their own. But most of them were rescued from the logging industry. At the sanctuary they were given a new life - a happy, relaxed and stress-free life.

So the following photos is my second entry for the #steemsummit #dslrphotography contest. I've chosen the elephants to be my subjects because I felt a connection with these elephants, their souls were just reaching out to me during my short visit to them and I hope could reach through the people who will be able to see my photos.

First, I want to introduce Sang Noi Kiddu meaning Naugthy Baby Elephant. And true to its name, he is one little naughty guy.

He loves to play, goof around and eat lots and lots of pumpkins! Despite this, he has a sweet nature in him.

The second one I want you guys to meet is Buon-Kam. She is the eldest among the herd at 54 years old. She is always hungry and never stops eating.

She loves sugarcanes the most.

And lastly, this is Kham Mum. She joined the camp last 2014. When she first arrived, she was skin and bones. There were open wounds all over her body. The sanctuary did their best to restore her health.

And now she is living the happy life she much deserves.
