January 15th is the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti. On Makar Sankranti, acts of charity and giving are performed. It is said that the sun is in the auspicious constellation of Uttarayana, and performing charity on this day is considered highly virtuous. Many customs are prevalent on Makar Sankranti in our Hindu traditions. One should give to their mother-in-law, elders, and younger ones, and also donate to the poor, according to one's capacity; there are no restrictions.

Anyone can donate money or other things as they wish and can afford. Donating khichdi (a dish made of rice and lentils) is considered a very important act of charity. In the khichdi donation, we include rice, urad dal (black lentils), salt, pickles, ghee, spices, black sesame seed ladoos, papad, and some money as a token offering. We mix these together and donate them to priests and the poor. Besides this, we also donate other things as we are able.

Today, I have brought slippers to donate because it is very cold. Slippers are very necessary for everyone. So, 14 items are donated today. It feels quite good to do this little bit, and I pray to God that He always makes us capable of performing many acts of charity.
