Basilica of Our Lady of Graces
Basilica of Our Lady of Graces
The church you see in this video is in Sardhana, India better known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Graces
Locals call it Begum Samru Church which stands as a captivating gem for tourists seeking history, architecture, and spirituality.
This church was built in 1822 by Begum Samru, a dynamic courtesan-turned-ruler who commanded an army and converted to Christianity.
This minor basilica draws pilgrims and explorers alike with its blend of Italian Renaissance grandeur and Indian influences.
Whatever the architectural importance the yellow-and-white building features Doric columns, three domes similar to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, and an octagonal dome flooding the interior with natural light.
Visitors love its vaulted ceilings, marble altar adorned with colorful stones in floral patterns, and paths lined with statues depicting Christ's life.
An 18-foot marble statue of Begum Samru, sculpted by Italian artist Adamo Tadolini, depicts her enthroned with a hookah, evoking her regal past.
But what attracts me most as a travel blogger is the life of Jesus Christ in statues scattered all over the church compound. I often visit this church as and when I am in India alone and with family and friends.
