How I celebrated pharmacy technician day.

Every October, the world celebrates Pharmacy Technicians. A day is set aside in the month to recognize and celebrate the dedication, skills, and hard work of great pharmacy technicians who plays an essential role in the healthcare system. It was really a happy day as it was our first time of celebrating pharmacy technician day in my state of origin and as the assistant secretary of the association, I planned the celebration.

First of all I took it to the radio station and it was announced and celebrated on radio station for days before the technician day which was on the 21 October, 2025.

I'm so proud of my profession and I enjoy each moment others hear about us because so many people know about nurses, doctors, pharmacist and laboratory scientist as health workers. But there is more there are other health workers that work effectively in different hospitals clinics and community pharmacies to carry out essential duties so as to achieve good health in patients.

And you know what?; pharmacy technician is part of it.

Who are pharmacy technician?

So you may wonder who are pharmacy technicians? We are also health workers that work hand-in-hand with the pharmacist in dispensing medication to patients.

We compound medication, we dispense under the supervision of a licence pharmacist. We are certified by the PCN that is the pharmacy council of Nigeria and pharmacy technician is also available in different countries of the world.

They are the backbone of pharmacy, whether in the hospitals, in the community pharmacies, or in the industrial settings, they work hard for the success in production and dispensing of drugs to patients.

The work of a Pharmacy Technicians

Pharmacy technicians perform a wide range of technical and administrative tasks, including:

• Dispense medications prescribed medication by the doctors accurately.

• Managing drug inventory in hospitals, clinics and community pharmacies.

• Compound medications for patients as needed.

• Educate patients on how to take their medications effectively for proper absorption.

• Assist the pharmacists in drug reviews.

• Maintain patient records and ensuring confidentiality effectively.

• In hospitals or clinics, pharmacy technicians prepare IV medications and ensure the right drug prescription get to the right patient at the right time.

Why Are Pharmacy Technicians Important?

We are indispensable in modern healthcare system because we help the pharmacists to focus more on patient counseling and clinical decisions, we carry out the technical workload from them and this makes the pharmacy runs smoothly.

We help to prevents medication errors, we ensures timely care and we save lives every single day, we the pharmacy technicians are so important in healthcare system because without us, the healthcare system would struggle with delays, errors, and disorganization. We are not much but we are silent achievers.

Pharmacy Technician Day: A Day to Recognize Their Efforts

Every year, Pharmacy Technician Day is celebrated globally in October.

This year’s celebration theme was; "Professionalism and quality" pharmacy technicians as frontline solution to quackery in Nigerian pharmacy practice.

We in Akwa Ibom state, my state of origin and residence, we visited the orphanage home to celebrate our great day with them. We also gave out medications to the orphanage homes, we gave food gifts and toiletries to them as well.
