I suspect that this problem is with religious leaders. Sadly, a large number of religious leaders end up exploiting and abusing their followers. When leaders exploit their followers, the followers diminish.

This is especially true with high demand religious. You will often find the high demands pushing the laity into poverty while the leaders who benefit from the demands live lavishly.
