Politicians, of both the Democratic and the Republican varieties, often exhibit a very tenuous relationship with the truth. Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claimed that the House Republicans, by blocking a move “to increase economic impact payments” up from $600, “cruelly deprived the American people of the $2,000 that the President agreed to support.” Cruelly deprived? The majority of the American people have not lost their jobs since the outbreak of the coronavirus, though certainly many have. Is it really impossible to distribute money from the IRS only to the people who have lost their jobs or who otherwise are in real need, without sending “money for nothin” to everyone else?

Although I haven’t seen the numbers, I imagine that most people who have kept their jobs have more money now than they would have had without the pandemic. Why? Because there’s much less to spend it on with so much closed down.

Why can’t Dems and Reps work together to target for assistance the people who have been hardest hit financially by the pandemic and the resulting economic shutdown? Protect the people who need protecting.

We are not all equally in dire straits. Help the people who need help. And that’s not everyone. Not by a long shot.
