I never saw anything too dramatic on my trips to the States for work, although some areas of Miami I went to were a bit dodgy. At least I never got personally threatened. I was staying in hotels, so there may have been less low-lifes around.
Hotels and Motels are somewhat different! The latter can very very dodgy, depending on the quality and area you stay in.
The people I worked with were pretty picky about where they stayed and the company was paying anyway. Tended to by Hiltons. Never stayed in US motel.
