I wonder if there were political reasons for switching to diesel and gas? Maybe oil companies were supporters of whoever was in charge?
Why would the oil companies care? The steam-turbine engine were already using oil products to produce the steam, and not coal.
My mistake. I thought steam engines were coal based.
