"SLC27-W5 | A One-Day Street Journalist: The Struggle Of Street Hawkers"

This season has been quite busy and full of activity, especially with street photography. Street vendors are like the morning stars, as they are the first people we encounter on the streets before starting our daily activities.

Over time, I have observed the lives of many vendors in my neighborhood and found that most of them hardly take breaks and actually live on the streets. They lead incredibly busy lives and seem to be at ease with it. I admire their hustle and wish them strength every new day!

What places did you visit and what types of hawker businesses did you review?

This time, I went to a shoe store nearby to check on the business, but when I arrived, she was not there.

People refer to her as "mama Chi," even though her actual name is Esther. This nickname comes from her little baby named Chidinma, which is why everyone calls her mama Chi. I would describe this woman as strong and lively, as she takes her business very seriously. From this same business, she provides food, clothing, and care for her children.

Mama Chi sets up her goods as early as 7:30 am after the school runs. She arrives, displays her items, and may go to the market to purchase more. I've often seen her carrying her baby on her back while sweeping her surroundings and washing clothes and dishes simultaneously. Perhaps she skips some market days, but since I started noticing her, I always see her goods whenever I pass by.

Despite the challenges life throws at her, she continues to smile. She is a businesswoman with a unique approach to her trade. She is friendly and open to questions. Even if you don’t end up buying from her, she will remember to greet you next time. I believe she has a good understanding of life and holds no grudges against it.

Have you ever bought anything from these stores? Show pictures + videos and show their prices.

I purchased these various shoes from mama Chi, who was firm about the price she quoted. She offers durable, high-quality footwear, which is what draws me to her shop.

Often, we find better quality items from street vendors than in larger stores. Her warm demeanor makes me return, in addition to her excellent products.

When I compared prices, I realized her items were not as pricey as I initially thought; she sells at reasonable rates, which is beneficial. This keeps her business thriving because whatever you see for sale this week may not be available next week, indicating that she sells quickly, so it's wise to buy right away.

How do they face sidewalk occupation, eviction or police harassment?

I can't say much about this since I'm not very knowledgeable, but I know they pay for space and then purchase daily or weekly tickets to prove they have that stand.

Because the space isn't on the market or main road, there shouldn't be any police harassment since they don't interact with the street hawkers. These hawkers just need to be careful of reckless drivers to protect their goods.

The street is a safe area, so there shouldn't be any need for harassment or eviction.

What are their biggest challenges and hopes for continuing this business?

I believe their main challenges revolve around daily income. This business relies heavily on daily sales, and if you don't sell, you won't have anything to take home. A single bad day can result in no food on the table.

Hawkers face harsh sunlight, rainy conditions, and unexpected situations that can compromise their safety and shelter. Some mothers with babies expose them to dust and fumes, which can lead to health issues.

People often underestimate hawkers, failing to recognize their hard work and dedication. Many of these hawkers offer quality products, but due to the stigma they face, they are often looked down upon.

In conclusion, I would say that nothing is more important to any hawker on the street than their children and their well-being. They fight for their children's education, clothing, food, and other necessities, which I believe represents their hope for survival.
