Belfast Castle

In northern Belfast you can find Belfast Castle. The castle was built in the 1860's and is now used for events such as weddings. Walking up to the castle made me feel like I was walking through another time period expecting to see a night standing guard at some point.

DSC00553 Modified.jpgThe castle and grounds made a beautiful setting. I can imagine it would make a wonderful location for almost any event.
DSC00550.JPGI can't imagine any young couple that wouldn't want a fairy tale wedding that included being married in a castle. We were told that the staircase is almost always used for wedding photos for weddings held at the castle.
DSC00538.JPGInside the castle had be brought to modern standards while maintaining that wonderful woodwork.
DSC00540.JPGRooms had been set up as dining rooms but it looks like this room could also be set up as a small meeting room if needed. The windows provide a great view of the lawn and gardens. I do believe the fire extinguisher looks a little out of place though.
DSC00542.JPGThe grounds offered great views of the city of Belfast and Belfast Harbor. Somewhere down there is where the Titanic was constructed.
DSC00557.JPGOne more view of the garden. Isn't that the young Irish lass from the Dublin Pubs post? She's really not Irish, it's my wife. She is of Irish descent and could pass for Irish until she says something. American accents stand out in Ireland, especially one from Tennessee.

There, @nananini, you know the reason that sooner or later I'll be back in Ireland enjoying that extended tour of the island. I'm sure we'll spend plenty of time in the area my wife's family originated in, once she finds it.

Sort:

Hey! I am a post ahead of you. The last one convinced me.

Did you get to see the whole glorious castle? As you say, just walking up would be awesome. Fricking unreal. How did they do this in 1860!?

Glad the renovations are tasteful.

Thanks again for the additional pics.

Has your wife done much research on her heritage?

Yes, we did see the whole castle. Beautiful place. After that first view of the top of the castle, I was expecting someone to step out with a sword to see if I should be allowed to pass. It was "fricking unreal".

I think she has done some and has an idea of where she is from. But, as an engineer and very analytical person, I want her to be sure. Can't think of much worse than going to someplace looking for far distant cousins and being in a place where her family was not welcome. Ireland is a lot like the south, friendly to visitors unless you have unpopular family there.

Really? There could be hard feeling or are you being facetious?

We are considering the DNA testing for fun. Want to do the kids and grandchildren because Ron's maternal grandfather was full blooded American Indian, Cherokee, so we feel it would be nice to have that doocumented for them.

Mostly facetious but the Irish can have deep emotions towards others that can bring out violence. For a good example, read some about the Northern Ireland Conflict.

I would imagine it did put family against family, similar to our Civil War. Hostilities among family probably existed for some time after the Civil War as well.

For Ireland I hope in time their strong emotions will fade.

Will see what I can find on the conflict. If the hotel and pub were both bombed several times that is an indication of the fequency of the violence..

More like neighborhood against neighborhood with Protestants in one neighborhood and Catholics in another. It was a political war rather than a religious war but that's how the lines got drawn. Drug sales to fund the war, terrorism, assassinations....ugly time for Northern Ireland.

And everyone felt they were right.

Ugly, confusing, sad.

One reason I love old buildings
is that they allow you to have a
physical experience of history
a piece of history.

That castle look amazing. I think
it is certainly worth paying a visit

It's certainly worth a visit and I agree with you about the old buildings. We took a bus from downtown after finding a bus stop within about a quarter of a mile of the castle. Walking up the street and seeing the castle gradually come into view was a treat for us. Here's one of the first views we got walking up as we reached a clearing in the trees.
