- Designation Origin: The "E8" suffix came from an experimental engineering designation testing the Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS).
- Smooth Ride: The HVSS setup utilized wider tracks that distributed weight more evenly, giving the vehicle a much smoother ride and superior handling over rough terrain compared to older vertical volute spring suspension (VVSS) Shermans.
- Firepower: It was equipped with an upgraded, high-velocity 76mm M1A2 main gun and featured "wet" ammunition storage stowage to reduce fire risks when penetrated.
