Nene Hatun, born in the mid-19th century, was a heroine who played a significant role during the Turkish War of Independence. Her real name was Halime Çavuş, born in Erzurum, Turkey, in the 1840s. She belonged to a family that played an important role in Erzurum's struggle for freedom.

During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, when Russian forces besieged Erzurum, Nene Hatun emerged as a leader rallying the women of Erzurum to arm themselves and defend their city. She actively participated in this defense, earning renown for her bravery.

Nene Hatun's most famous act occurred during the resistance against the Russian occupation of Erzurum. One day, the Turkish women of Erzurum, led by Nene Hatun, engaged in combat against Russian soldiers. Armed with a pickaxe, Nene Hatun attacked the Russian soldiers, setting an example of courage for other women. This event demonstrated that Turkish women could play an active role in defending their homeland during times of war.

Nene Hatun also actively participated in the Turkish War of Independence, becoming a symbol of the Turkish national identity. Her courage and sacrifice immortalized her in the hearts of the Turkish people and served as an inspiration for Turkish women. Today, various monuments and schools across Turkey commemorate her memory, and her story holds a significant place in Turkish history.
