Es Teler

Imagine a plate of hot steamed rice with a spread of all kinds of dishes teasing you to make a choice. Originated from Padang city in Indonesia, Nasi Padang is when the dishes are laid out on your table, but here it is tweaked so you make your choice at the counter instead.

This Indonesian restaurant is our first choice every-time we get a craving for Nasi Padang. It has gotten a little pricy over the years, but the food is still as good as the first day we tried it more than a decade ago.

So when we passed it the other day, we couldn't resist hopping in to grab a late lunch. Hence it is why it was pretty quiet. Otherwise it can be quite busy, and if you go during fasting month (which is just around the corner), you better book a table or be disappointed. Once you've made your choice, the food will be heated and served at your table.

Ikan Merah Masak Lemak, Red Snapper cooked in Coconut milk for a little gravy to wet the rice. Don't let the colour fool you, for what you don't see is the crushed Cili Padi/Bird's Eye Chilli.

Rendang is a must have here. The meat is tender and compliments that yellow gravy that comes with the fish.

Sambal Udang Petai/Spicy Prawn with stinky beans. Stinky beans is not for everyone. It has a very strong taste and smell, and you will stink up the bathroom even with the amount you hardly see in this picture. I love it though, and it does come with many benefits, which you might want to check out before you say "No" to it.

Begedil/Potato Cutlet with bits of beef for the kids who can't eat the spicy stuff.

IMG_8676.jpg
Crispy Potato Chips with just a dash of heat, again for those who can't really eat spice.

Pucuk Paku in Coconut milk is another favourite. Flavoured with anchovies, this wild fern has curly ends and a very slight slimy aftertaste. This one is safe for the non-spicy eaters.

Last but not least, is this chilli dish. Yes, it's just chilies, fried with anchovies until it becomes like a paste. It adds that final kick to your meal. I could just eat this with rice. It is so good. There is also the red chilli variety but I prefer the green.

After all that heat, you know you got to wash it down with some dessert. Es Teler has avocado, jackfruit, coconut meat, palm fruit, red sago pearls, swimming in coconut milk, drizzled with syrup and palm sugar. Yumzzz!! Sometimes, even if I am not hungry, I'd step in just to order this to satisfy my sweet tooth.

The bill for three of us. Like I said, it is a bit pricy but it is worth it if you are feeling like some Indonesian. With Ramadhan around the corner, I guess this is one to consider if you are planning a break fast with your Muslim friends.

Cheers,
