I once took a taxi ride in Washington DC and the cabbie was really trying to get his head around universal healthcare. I was living in NZ at the time so he would ask:
"So, in New Zealand if [injury/accident/illness scenario] happened to me, I could just go to the hospital and it would be free".
The scenarios got increasingly bizzare so moved to "surely you wouldn't be treated if ..."
He just couldn't fathom healthcare that didn't depend on you having insurance.
Back in states , if you don't have insurance ( likely during an unemployment period) and you end up visiting ED for some procedure , in majority of cases you will go bankrupt.
Employers have a distinct upper hand in that arrangement.
