Meet Asgardia, the first space nation.

in #technology7 years ago

Asgardia - the very first nation in space - has launched a satellite this week, and with that, for the first time, she brought an object into orbit around the earth. It contains digital data of 18,000 of its inhabitants, a representation of the flag, the coat of arms and the constitution.

It was Russian scientist Dr. Igor Ashurbeyli (53) who founded Asgardia in October 2016. The independent nation was named after the place where according to Norse mythology the gods live. It now has more than 133,000 inhabitants from more than 200 countries. Everyone who is of age, has an e-mail address and accepts the constitution (which was approved this summer), can apply for citizenship.

Peaceful

The goal, according to Ashurbeyli, is to establish a peaceful society in space, regardless of origin, language, color, religion, gender or age. But also to make access to space technology easier and to protect the earth from threats from space, such as asteroids and space debris created by humans.

Although the inhabitants now live on earth, the launch of the Asgardia-1 has brought the nation a step closer to its ultimate goal: living in space. The satellite was taken away by a cargo ship from the American space agency NASA to the international space station ISS as its destination. Somewhere in the coming weeks, the aircraft will be unpacked there by the six astronauts who are currently staying there.

Space travel

Then the package can start his own space journey in orbit around the earth. The rig will circulate between 5 and 18 months - the normal lifespan of such a satellite - after which it will burn up. Rather, it is a symbolic journey, but with that Ashurbeyli sticks to a promise he made when Asgardia was founded: to give residents the opportunity to enter the space for the first time this year on the basis of their data.
