What Is so Special About Foldable Smartphones?
Foldable Phones Are Happening!
Being able to have phones that fold is something major smartphone manufacturers like Samsung have been spending a long time working on. Google has mentioned that new versions of Android starting with Android Q will support foldable phones and phones with multiple displays. Why are people so excited about a feature that out of context sounds pretty basic?
Foldable Phones Remind Me of Flip Phones
Remember the early days of mobile phones when most people were using a flip phone? (Some people still are, and I used one pretty recently myself). Flip phones were nice and compact and easy to carry around. They were also very durable.
It seems things have come full circle and now even modern phone manufacturers want to emulate some of the features these older phones had.
Why Use a Foldable Phone?
You can fold a device with a much bigger screen into a smaller one. I am very excited at the idea of having a tablet sized foldable smartphone.
It will also be interesting to see what software experiences manufacturers like Samsung offer. When it comes to phones software is as important if not more important than hardware.
A Foldable Phone from Samsung
Samsung at its annual developer conference unveiled a device with what they call an Infinity Flex Display. The phone can be folded “hundred of thousands of times”. The phone can run three applications at the same time as well.
I am quite impressed with the idea of this phone. I won't be able to afford one though until a price drop or until a cheaper version is made. The price is very high.
The Future of Foldable Phone
Will foldable phones and devices catch on? Will they be a fad that people forget about in the future? Samsung seems to take the idea very seriously. I am excited and await further news.
