Using AI Tools: Why I Use Grok for X — and ChatGPT for Everything Else

Friends occasionally ask me about AI systems—especially ChatGPT and Grok—and how I use them. Since these tools are now widely available, I think it’s worth explaining the distinction as I experience it in practice.

I use Grok primarily for questions involving X (Twitter) and Elon Musk. That appears to be what it is optimized for, and in that narrow role it can be useful.

For everything else—research, writing, history, science, technical explanation, and long-form discussion—I use ChatGPT.

A Noticeable Difference in Speed and Style

Subjectively, Grok feels noticeably slower. It often appears to pause while scanning the internet or checking current sources before responding.

ChatGPT, by contrast, usually responds immediately, as though the information is already “to hand.” In extended conversations, this difference becomes very obvious.

This is not a complaint about Grok; it reflects a design choice.

Live Retrieval vs. Internal Knowledge

Grok seems designed to emphasize freshness—what is being said right now on X, what Elon Musk has recently posted, or what is trending. That requires live retrieval, filtering, and summarization, which costs time and disrupts conversational flow.

ChatGPT appears to rely much more heavily on internalized knowledge—patterns, structures, historical context, and language models already embedded in the system. As a result, it excels at synthesis, explanation, and maintaining coherence over long discussions.

The tradeoff is clear:

• Grok prioritizes immediacy and current signal
• ChatGPT prioritizes depth, continuity, and reasoning

Why This Matters for Research

When I ask about a place like Victoria, Texas, ChatGPT can answer immediately and sensibly. I have no doubt that I could ask comparable questions about cities in Germany or China and receive similarly believable, high-level answers.

This works because the system is not “looking things up” each time; it is drawing on large-scale models of how cities, institutions, and societies function.

That makes ChatGPT feel less like a search engine and more like a research assistant—one with an off-the-charts IQ, no ego, and no agenda.

On Risks and Responsibility

There are obvious dangers in powerful actors using AI systems at scale for persuasion or manipulation. That concern is legitimate.

But using AI as an individual researcher, writer, or thinker has no meaningful downside. It is no more inherently dangerous than books, libraries, or calculators—tools that can be misused, but which overwhelmingly expand human capability.

Bottom Line

I use Grok when I want to know what is happening on X.

I use ChatGPT when I want to understand something.

The difference is real, not imagined, and it reflects how each system is built—not some vague notion of “personality” or marketing hype.

Having watched computing evolve since the 1960s, I can say this much with confidence: whatever one chooses to call it, this is a genuine turning point.
