Is The Vacuum Cleaner Spying On Us?
Roomba, who creates the robotic vacuum cleaners is working on a deal to sell the privacy info of their customers who have purchased the robot.
The company has indicated that they can map the entire floor, collect info on furniture, traffic patterns and perhaps even confirm if there is a baby in the house. All of this info, and more, is of interest to corporate marketing firms.
Who Cares?
People just do not seem to understand the value of their privacy info. Not the value of privacy itself as a concept, but rather, the monetary value of releasing your privacy info for cash. It is not just Roomba doing this, companies like Facebook and Google have been thriving off this privacy stealing business model for years.
However, Android, Chrome, and Facebook users are more populous now than ever! So not many people seem to care.
However, I do not think we should get so complacent, so quickly.
You Are The Product
Users will justify the use of GMail and Facebook saying, those products are free, so I give away my personal info instead of paying to use those products...
WRONG!
Nothing is free and you are the product being bought and sold. Those companies become rich beyond our wildest dreams, simply by selling their customers private info. So if you don't think that your privacy info is worth cash, then you do not value yourself enough.
Can The Internet Of Things Be Trusted?
Is selling a product not enough anymore? Roomba has made a profit margin of at least 35% on the robot but still, that is not enough. Especially if consumers do not place a monetary value on their privacy information.
So Roomba might as well turn their customers into a product too!
It turns out, that all Internet Of Things devices could do this exact same thing.
Looking at You Android
Google already does it with their Android cell phones. They sell the phone and the OS as a product, but that is not where the real money is made. That just gets the consumer to pay for the infrastructure that Google will use behind the scenes to make really big money, by selling the privacy info of their customers.
Will your car one day report back how you use it to Ford, so that they too can turn consumers into their product to be bought and sold?
It's All About Money
Let's be clear here. I have nothing to hide from anyone. So I am not "scared" of robot vacuums or Android phones.
Rather, I just think that I should get a cut of the money made from selling my privacy info. Very similar to how we get a cut here on Steemit.
For the record... I have never, nor will I ever carry a cell phone. This is just one of many reasons why. Someone is going to need to pay me to carry that cell phone, not the other way around.
I Love Robots
Anyone looking at my blog will see numerous posts about machine learning, robotics, programming and technology. I thrive on this stuff so I have no issues with those ideals.
All I want here is a cut from selling my privacy info. That part is very hard for most folks to understand. However, I think the user base on Steemit understands this really well, which is partly why I shared these thoughts here today.
Don't let yourself get complacent, don't fall for these dirty tricks from Google, Roomba, and Facebook. Insist that you are paid for your time and effort because nothing is free in this world.
Unplug your TV when not in use. Cover laptop cam with tape. Keep cell phone in a metal tin when not using. Literally accepted habits that don't raise an eyebrow anymore. Getting worse with smart home, echo etc. Big Brother would be so proud of the shackles we so willingly invite into our homes.
OK I ran across a good one today that fits here...
heheheheh
Anyway, nice to meet you @johnsmith and thanks for stopping by to chime in. I checked out your blog and wow, pretty awesome blog! Followed! See you around!
People saying Facebook is free to use and therefore has the right to sell your information for profit, most likely have the same mindset saying a thing like Steemit is a scam. Great resteem @dwinblood :)! You know what, have another resteem ^.^
That is a really good point @droucil! I checked out your deep thinking blog too, so this sort of thinking makes sense coming from you.
Any friend of @dwinblood is a friend of mine, I read some of your posts and I have followed you! Thanks for chiming in and it is nice to meet you!
Cheers! And likewise, nice to meet u :)
It scares me when people don't care about these issues.
I walk around scared all day lol.
THis is really funny, because this is exactly why I said I am not "scared" of Vacuum cleaners!
I know this issue can get confusing so quickly. All I am after here, is to get paid for my info.
For example, let's say that Steemit sells all of my privacy info to make money... OK, fine, am I getting paid for it? Yes? Then great! Carry on! I have no issues here as long as I get my cut.
Does that mean Roomba is going to sell the dirt on you? ;-)
If the Internet Of Things is going to do the same and you want a cut from selling your privacy info @kidsysco, are you investing in the IoTA crypto?
Genius idea @leoplaw! HA! Perhaps if I received a cut for buying the robot.
You'll clean up with IoTA. ;-)
yep, the easy thing to do is not go there.
I have a smart phone finally, 'cause the dogs chewed up my dumb phone, and I thought what the heck.
But is windows :0
however, I just put it on battery saver and it turns off everything.
almost everything anyhow, all those painful notifications.
Don't open the internet on it, unless I am desperate.
I like having an atlas on board, although it doesn't locate me on it, I can do that with my grey power.
I manually disabled gps, and I leave the phone at home almost all the time, unless I will be in the car, with the phone on airplane mode.
lol
If I have problems or a breakdown it's a godsend.
but that's it, oh and it has a pretty impressive camera
I keep saying what I would use is a camera that can be used as a phone, rather than the other way round.
I like cameras better.
you have the right attitude. And rest assured my house is well dumb. no smartness anywhere here, built 117 years ago
big hugs
following of course
Your house is dumb. LOL! My house is downright STUPID! And I like it that way! Funny, I checked out your blog too! Followed! I will be seeing you around.
Living in Canada, my fear is that there will be an IoT attack on the smart thermostats.
Picture a beautiful -40° day. Someone hacks the central server for the NEST thermostats and turns every furnace off. Then, to go one step further, the MyQ server (garage doors) is told to open all garage doors.
What about cars that have autopilot? Cyber-security is going to continue to be more and more important.
Maybe we'll be able to hack into someone's car and move the slower car to the slow lane. :-)
Lol. What happens if the government decides all cars should be in the slow lane? Tax the fast lane?
Nope, I would have to vote against that law, and vote for taxing those people in the SLOW LANE!
That's another hidden risk of autonomous vehicles. Governments and insurance companies might know more than we want them too.
This comment has received a 2.22 % upvote from @lovejuice thanks to: @theabsolute. They have officially sprayed their dank amps all over your post rewards. GOOD TIMES! Vote for Aggroed!
Just hack their car and move them over! This is a genius idea! Upvoted! LOL!
Honestly, I can see emergency vehicles having the ability to do this in the future. You have an ambulance and people are in your way, just flip the get out of my way switch
Right, so China already hacked my identity and now they get to hack my HOUSE TOO?!?!?!
So you are from Canada, eh?
Sorry, I couldn't resist. We love our friends to the North! And sometimes I think Canada calls my name. I really need to visit some time. We have thought about it for a really cool fishing trip... Maybe someday.
Anyway, I checked out your blog and followed you. Thanks for stopping by to chime in!
My Brother-in-law caught a 55" musky last week on the Ottawa river.
I've followed you too.
I'd rather keep what privacy I can. People laughed at me for covering the camera on my laptop back in 2008. I did it because once I was logged in to my google account and I saw a picture of me in the profile that I had not taken, it was that day during that session, and I couldn't find a way to delete it, and I have never seen it again. Now people are warned to cover their cameras because they can be used.
I am staring at the piece of tape I have over the cam on my mac RIGHT NOW!!!
So some parts are more scary than others, I agree.
Im not sure that the robot has cams on them. I think maybe a real simple cam, but it does have several other sensors all over the device used to pick up... data...
ahem...
I mean dirt!
lol
I checked out your blog and followed you @aboutyourbiz, thanks for stopping by to chime in! Nice to meet ya!
data, dirt they both start with a "D" ;)
Yeah, I checked yours too and did likewise. Nice to meet you too!
Technology makes us easier to track. Im not surprised at all but it is scary.
I would not mind it if I knew about it up front, and agreed to it, hopefully by getting paid like we do on Steemit! So it is scary, yes, but it is also unfair.
Nice to meet you @feelsomoon, I just checked out your blog and followed. Thanks for stopping by! See you around!
i knew ittttttt i robot is for real whe are finisheddddd DOOOOOOOOMMMMM !!!
love the post upvoted and resteemed
Hahaha awesome! Please not however, I am not really scared of the vacuum cleaner... I just want my cut! I checked out your blog and I have followed you back! Nice to meet you! See you around and thanks for chiming in!
Hahahaha your welcome awesome one and watch that evil vacuum cleaner 🤖🤖👽👽cheersss
The problem is that we pay for the advertising.
All of this invasion of privacy we are paying for.
Either through taxes, hidden taxes (inflation) or higher prices. (because advertising gets paid from sales revenue)
So, instead of paying for these services outright and keeping our data and information, or selling it as we see fit, we pay for all of this overhead, brainwashing and privacy intrusion.
So, its not free. In fact you are paying for it twice. Once in dollars, and once in getting screwed.
Hello @builderofcastles,
If they simply give me my cut... I will totally shut up about spying.
Anyway, I checked out your blog too. We are into cooking and baking, so some of your recent posts are interesting. I am following you now, so you will probably see me poking around some of your posts later tonight!
Please do. I look forward to your comments. And some more of your posts like this one.
