An airport stray dog removed by us

in #thailand10 hours ago

We got a call the other day that we werent' suspecting and we think it was because of the work that we have done with the police department here locally in the past that they even knew to call us.

There was a dog that was going in and out of the runway area of the airport and this was causing some quite obvious problems for both flights and for the dog itself. We don't know why the dog was attracted to the airport but maybe it was the relative safety of the interior of the fence where no other dogs were.

This story ended up making the local news and spread pretty far and wide on Thai social media so it was kind of cool that we ended up getting some recognition for safely removing her from that area.

The next problems we faced though was she appeared to have had puppies somewhat recently and we though that maybe she would lead us to them but airport regulations will not allow a crew on the grounds near the runway for obvious reasons. We were given permits to search around the fence but they were not going to shut down air travel just for the sake of us finding a few puppies. Instead, they set us up in an old viewing tower where we could watch her for a while (they had their own people doing this as well) to see where she would wander and perhaps return to her puppies.

We did notice after a while that she kept returning to this one back portion of the grounds and at that point, and only with an airport guide who completely controlled where we are allowed to walk, were we allowed to follow to the point we suspected that the pups might be.

The suspicion turned out to be correct but unfortunately we only found 2 pups, one already dead and one very close to the same fate. We rush transported the pup to the vet but it was too late. It was at that point that we made the choice to remove her from the airport because the alternative was what places like this will normally do, and that would be to kill the animal. Sorry, but when animals interfere with massive human operations, that is just the way it goes.

She was very easy to coax into a kennel and seemed a bit depressed to be leaving but she didn't fight us at all. We got her to the veterinarian, got her vaccinated, treated for parasites, and also scheduled a sterilization for when it was safe, then performed that as well.

Since this story had gotten so much attention on Thai social media we were really happy when a bunch of people came forward to offer to adopt her and after carefully looking at the applicants we selected one family for the job. We hope to work with them to keep the publicity going for this dog so maybe we can direct more attention to the other 47 dogs we currently have that are up for adoption.

The transfer to her new home was complete as of yesterday and we look forward to getting pictures of her new living arrangement at her new house in Krabi. The family has a gated garden and had already purchased dog beds and toys for her. We are very much looking forward to her enjoying her new life, one that doesn't have the rumble of jets taking off an landing, one that has a reliable source of food and water. One of comfort and safety.

Thanks to the family and the Thai community at large for making this happen.
