The monks helping us really turned things around for us

in #thailand2 days ago

We have been around for around a decade and for a lot of our time operating as registered animal-welfare charity in both the UK and Thailand it has seemed like an uphill battle with very little cause for celebration. This was especially true during Covid where we received virtually no contributions and were prohibited from performing a lot of our duties.

Then, somewhere, somehow, someone had a bright idea that truly changed everything. We made a connection with a few of the monks at the larger temples, especially Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi, and our efforts started to have more traction and were far more effective.

One of the toughest parts of our operation is knowing about dogs that need help before it is too later or in the case of sterilization operations, finding out that a non-sterilized animal has been introduced to an existing pack before they manage to have a litter of puppies. We simply cannot have eyes everywhere at all times and despite our best efforts ,at that time the local communities didn't really know what we were here for or didn't even know we existed.

Partnering up with the monks at the temples changed all of this.

These kind gentlemen, as well as their female counterparts at the temples, live and work around the stray and abandoned dogs and cats every single day. They are familiar, without a checklist and a bunch of photos, with which dogs are always there and which ones are new additions. They have named a lot of them and get to know them as the days go on and many of them have established very close bonds and the dogs and cats will follow them on their daily duties on and off temple grounds. The monks know their ticks, they know their habits, they know where they hide, they know which ones are finicky eaters and which ones are shy. They know everything that a dog owner would know but at times know this information about dozens or even scores of animals.

We couldn't possibly know that seeing as how we are spread out across the entire province and have tended to thousands of animals over the decade.

Although technology is normally ignored by the monkhood (as far as I understand it) some of them do have phones and it is a bit funny because they normally only have the old Nokia style phones that only make phone calls and do not have data packages or social media. These monks somehow connected with one of our reps years ago and although in retrospect it seems so obvious, once this connection was made we all of a sudden had some very important volunteers who were working towards the same goal that we are.

They want the dogs to be healthy, but since they are limited by the funds that the temple provides them with, they cannot tend to the issues on their own. Enter Krabi Animal Welfare: We have resources but don't know where the problems are. As a team we have been able to successfully curb the explosion of population at Tiger Cave Temple as well as several other large temples in the Krabi province for the first time in recorded history.

All people involved and even various government employees are starting to notice that our tactics are in fact, effective as well as very beneficial to the dog population at large.

While we were working tirelessly before this alliance, there is no denying that once the partnership began that our efforts are far more effective.

It is really difficult for us to be everywhere all at once, but our monk friends live there and now that nearly every temple in a 100km radius knows about us, we are able to handle crises a lot better than we could before. It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time that we would simply turn up and start checking out the dogs and really struggling to get a grasp on which dogs were vaccinated and which ones weren't. Treating a dog for ticks twice isn't that big of a deal but it is a waste of precious resources. Now that the monks are "on our side" we have very detailed records of which dogs are new, and which ones are not because it is all stored inside the heads of the people that are the most familiar with the situation.

Old or young, these men and women are always on the lookout for issues with the fur babies and they have become our eyes on the ground all over the province. I know I repeat this a lot but we really to appreciate their help and I know that they feel the same way about us.

We have made so much progress in the past 3 years after forming a bond with the monks and thankfully it appears as though our partnership is going to continue forever!
