El elefante y el Sol (cuento infantil) - The Elephant and the Sun (children's story)

Cuenta una antigua leyenda que en un bosque lejano y nunca pisado por el hombre, existía un elefante con un problema particular.
A diario se quejaba de las cosas que veía porque no entendía para qué servía cada planta, roca o elemento de la naturaleza. Cierta mañana se levantó muy malhumorado porque a pesar de ver su salida a diario, no comprendía cuál era la función del Sol.
—¡Me cuesta dormir con tan brillante luz! —murmuraba— ¿acaso no basta con la luz de la Luna?
El Sol lo escucho quejarse, y gentilmente ideó una forma de ayudar al elefante a entender mejor las cosas. Como era muy de mañana, los vientos fríos del norte soplaron entre los árboles del bosque haciendo que cada criatura sintiera su caricia helada. El elefante se estremeció al no tener un pelaje que lo cubriera.
—¡Que frío tan terrible hace esta mañana! —dijo moviendo su trompa.
El Sol dejó caer suavemente un rayo tibio de luz sobre él para que se calentara. El elefante se sintió más confortado y agradeció la calidez que estaba recibiendo.
—Bueno, al menos sé que el Sol sirve únicamente para cuando sopla la brisa invernal en las mañanas —dijo poco convencido el elefante moviendo sus dos orejas.
El gran paquidermo se adentró en el bosque a buscar alimentos, pronto se encontró en un lugar muy oscuro y se tropezaba con los árboles al caminar.
—¡¿Pero acaso me estoy volviendo ciego?! No puedo ver nada con tantas sombras a mi alrededor —se quejó de nuevo.
El Sol lanzó un haz de luz entre las ramas altas de los árboles para iluminar el camino del elefante y así este no tropezara en las sombras. El elefante entonces agradeció la ayuda y reconoció que el Sol parecía ser útil en algunas circunstancias.
El Sol sonreía un poco al notar que su amigo terrestre era un tanto terco y obstinado.
Finalmente el elefante llegó a un lugar donde crecían unos bejucos muy sabrosos para él, le encantaba devorarlos a montón siempre que estos estuvieran secos y crujientes. Pero esta vez estaban tiernos y así mantenían cierto sabor amargo.
—¡Que contrariedad! Esto sí que no me le esperaba, ¿Cómo voy a comer estos bejucos ahora? —dijo molesto el elefante al ver el forraje todavía verde y húmedo.
De nuevo el Sol intervino para ayudarlo. Con su calor secó en unos instantes todo aquel pastizal, y el elefante estaba feliz de poder comerlo.
—¡Ahora veo que el Sol es muy útil! —dijo alegremente— sin él la vida sería muy distinta y los bejucos menos sabrosos.
El Sol estuvo contento de haber ayudado al elefante a entender mejor la naturaleza de las cosas creadas, y se aseguró de que ese día estuviera despejado con un hermoso cielo azul.

There is an old legend that in a distant forest never trodden by man, there was an elephant with a particular problem.
Every day he complained about the things he saw because he did not understand what each plant, rock or element of nature was for. One morning he woke up in a very bad mood because, in spite of seeing the sunrise every day, he did not understand what the function of the sun was.
-I find it difficult to sleep in such bright light! -He muttered, 'Isn't the moonlight enough?
The Sun listened to him complain, and gently devised a way of helping the elephant to understand things better. As it was very early in the morning, the cold northern winds blew through the trees of the forest making each creature feel its icy touch. The elephant shuddered at not having a coat to cover it.
-What a terrible cold it is this morning! -he said, shaking his trunk.
The Sun gently dropped a warm ray of light upon him to warm him up. The elephant felt more comfortable and was grateful for the warmth he was getting.
-Well, at least I know that the Sun is only good for when the winter breeze blows in the morning,' said the elephant unconvincedly waving his two ears.
The great pachyderm went into the forest to look for food, soon he found himself in a very dark place and he was stumbling over the trees as he walked.
-But am I going blind? I can't see anything with all these shadows around me,' he complained again.
The sun threw a beam of light between the high branches of the trees to illuminate the path of the elephant so that it would not stumble in the shadows. The elephant then thanked me for my help and recognized that the Sun seemed to be useful in some circumstances.
The Sun smiled a little as he noticed that his earthly friend was somewhat stubborn and obstinate.
Finally the elephant arrived at a place where they grew some vines very tasty for him, he loved to devour them a lot as long as they were dry and crisp. But this time they were tender and so they kept a certain bitter taste.
-What a setback! Now, this is what I wasn't expecting. How am I going to eat these lianas now? -said the elephant, annoyed at the sight of the still green and wet fodder.
Again the sun intervened to help him. With its heat it dried up all that pasture in a few moments, and the elephant was happy to eat it.
-Now I see that the Sun is very useful! -he said cheerfully, 'Without it life would be very different and the vines less tasty.
The Sun was happy to have helped the elephant understand better the nature of created things, and he made sure that on this day there was a beautiful blue sky.
