Three gorges dam

in #threeyesterday (edited)

Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest hydroelectric dam, built across the Yangtze River in China. It’s one of the biggest engineering projects ever made.

📍 Basic facts
• Location: Yangtze River, Hubei Province, China
• Length: ~2,335 meters (about 2.3 km)
• Height: ~185 meters
• Construction start: 1994
• Fully completed: Around 2020 (project stages finished over time)
• Type: Concrete gravity dam

⚡ Power generation
• Installed capacity: ~22,500 MW (world’s largest hydroelectric plant)
• Designed annual generation: about 88 TWh electricity
• Has produced over 1,600 TWh total electricity since 2003

That’s enough electricity to power huge regions and reduce coal use and emissions.

🌊 Reservoir & size impact
• Reservoir length: ~600 km upstream
• Reservoir area: ~1,045 km²
• Allows large ships to travel far inland (up to Chongqing)

🎯 Why it was built

Main purposes:
1. Generate electricity
2. Control floods
3. Improve river shipping/navigation
4. Store water for dry seasons

⚠️ Controversies
• Over 1 million people relocated
• Flooded historical and scenic areas
• Environmental impacts on ecosystems

🧠 Interesting fact

In 2012 it became the world’s top hydroelectric facility, overtaking the Itaipu Dam.

If you want, I can explain more, like:
• How it works (simple explanation)
• Pros and cons
• Comparison with other big dams
• Why it matters for climate and energy
