Did you see? "Sümela (Mother Mary) Monastery of Trabzon"

in #travel6 years ago

The Sumela Monastery is thought to have been founded by two priests named Barnabas and Sophronios from Athens during the time of the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I (375dan395). The monastery continued until 1923.

The building consists mainly of the main church, several chapels, a kitchen, student rooms, a guest house, a library and a holy spring. This collection of structures is spread over a fairly large area. The large aqueduct, which was supposed to bring water at the entrance of the monastery, is leaning on the hillside. A large section of this multi-eyed arch has been destroyed today. In the buildings around the courtyard, the cabinets, cells, and hearths of Turkish art are also seen.

The frescoes that equip the interior and exterior walls of the church and the chapel, which form the main unit of the monastery, are dated to the early 18th century. These frescoes can be seen in three layers in three different cycles.
