RE: The Expat Life: Lying Landlords

in #travel7 years ago

As gringos we sometimes come off as arrogant, seem rude and don't show the proper respect. How you come across is critical, polite society won't tolerate it. However, humor is always helpful and can change perspective. Use at the right moment in the right situation and it can win the day. Maybe the landlord will look kindly upon you and think "hey, maybe this gringo isn't so bad after all".

Alladin,
I hear you. After six years here, with local friends from all levels of society, I don't have problems in polite society. Likewise, my wife is a managerial-level Ecuadorean who regularly interacts with minister-level government officials.
But the fact that we get along very well doesn't seem to preclude about half the people we rent from trying to rip us off!

Is it worth the trouble to buy something? I would think in Ecuador there are good deals. Buy low and look to break even on the way out when leaving.
