Before you pack # Rome - 5 things you should do while visiting Rome

in #travel7 years ago

Rome is an extremely interesting and intriguing mixture of the ancient and the modern. It’s hard to imagine how technological advanced ancient Rome was at that time. The invention of concrete, aqueducts, newspaper, welfare, roads and highways are still found in today’s society. The city is incredible for every tourist. It is filled with the most beautiful and iconic architecture. But before you pack, these are 5 things you should do while visiting Rome.

1. Sightseeing

Is this even a surprise? Rome is such an amazing city with such deep history and amazing man made structures that were way ahead of it’s time. Sightseeing is the number 1 thing you should do while visiting Rome. What I like to do when visiting a city is just getting lost. I just walk follow some random street which seems interesting to me. This has led me to the most amazing non tourist locations where everything is pure Italian and untouched. Finding myself in small streets with small restaurants and everything is Italian. There’s no English on the menu, no English-speaking waiter and not even English speaking tourists eating there.

There’s too much to list. I’d recommend heading over to lonely planet for a full list on all the sights.

2. Eat getalo and drink espresso

Hmmm…Gelato! Or Ice-cream as you may call it. Italy is known for it’s gelato and it is delicious. There are so many different flavours and gelato-places all over the city! There’s no way around it. You have to eat gelato while being in Rome.

Italy is also known for it’s espresso and yes it is different! Unlike most espresso’s in other countries, there’s no espresso roast in Italy. The espresso is made with an espresso machine which uses high pressure to extract the coffee. This results in an excellent espresso with less caffeïne that is less bitter. Below is a picture of some excellent Italian breakfast!

3. Italian food

Italian food is delicious! My favourite dish is pasta carbonara. I have eaten so many carbonara’s at so many different places throughout my life, but never this good. Italy is known for it’s pizza and pasta’s. Don’t neglect it, it is amazing.

4. Explore Trastevere

So you did all of the above? You’ve seen the Coloseum, Trevi Fountain, you had the best gelato and espresso of your life and you ate pasta like there’s no tomorrow. Now what? It’s time to cross the Tiber river to Trastevere - A beautiful neighbourhood with small streets, amazing sights, fun nightlife and delicious food!

Traverse is a beautiful area! Here you can find the 10 top things to do. https://theculturetrip.com/europe/italy/articles/the-top-10-things-to-do-and-see-in-rome-s-trastevere/

5. Take a trip to the beach

Although Rome isn’t directly near the coast. It is possible to reach it pretty easily. There are buses and trains that can take you there. In as quick as 20 mins you can find yourself relaxing on the beautiful Italian coastline. I rented a car with @angeloflnp and drove along the Italian coast all day. We found many hidden treasure's along the way and drove all the way north to Firenze (Florence).

Here's a list of the best beaches near Rome!

Wow beautiful pictures, I hope to visit Rome someday i love its ancient architecture. Thank you for sharing your experience and advice.

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it. Rome is definitely worth a visit, there's so much to do.

Very nice pix. I really like old school ancient structures and ways of building things.

oh the pastaaaa!!! it makes me hungry now haha:)

How about this one :)

Thank you man, that thing is better to know before going there to reduce the culture shock. Great post!

A great post on visiting Rome. You have it completely right, find places to eat which don't have a tourist menu! We also ate copious amounyts of gelato on our trip. The place that was #1 on tripadvisor really was the best, even with its laughable "this gelato changed my life" reviews.

That's true. The ones with lots of locals are usually the best. I got to love the Italian gelato, it's so good!

Cool I love Rome - will definitely go back there! Didn't even know there was a beach...

The beaches are outside of Rome. But you can get there easily and fast by public transport.
