Moon Mountains Ruwenzori

in #travel7 years ago

Hello.
Today there is one more unusual place on the planet.
For centuries it was believed that somewhere in the center of Africa there are mountains with snow that feed the Nile River with water.
Back in the second century BC. one Greek geographer spoke of these mountains, calling them Lunar.

In the late nineteenth century, these mountains were discovered by researcher Henry Stanley. This scientist gave another name to the found mountain massif.
He called them in the same way as the local residents - Ruwenzori, which means: "Calling rain."
But in our time, still many call these mountains Lunar.
The Rwenzori are located just north of the equator and are the natural boundary between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

This mountain chain stretched for 130 kilometers, and in width the Lunar Mountains occupy a territory of 50 kilometers. The difference from other mountains of East Africa, which have a volcanic origin, is that the Rwenzori consist of crystalline rocks that rose to the surface due to underground pressure.
The highest point of the Moon Mountains is 5109 meters. However, these mountains are still difficult to see, if not to come closer. Why? Since this mountain chain is very often surrounded by clouds and fog.
The name of these mountains - "Calling Rain" - speaks for itself. There is a lot of precipitation here. In some places, you can find yourself waist-deep in the mud. Therefore, for walks here some preparation is required.
But there is much to see here. Because of the rain, many small lakes appeared, and the vegetation became a lush dress of mountain slopes. It is interesting that here plants reach large sizes.

For example, a lobelia plant called "hairy fingers" usually grows to a height of not more than 30 centimeters, and here you can see specimens and six-meter height. Also you can find huge ragworts and treelike heather, rising to 12 meters. And the addition of the landscape is the abundance of colors of different colors and smells.

On the gentle slopes you can meet monkeys and leopards.

Travelers climbing the Moon Mountains, first appear in the rainforest, crossing the Bujuku River several times.

And at an altitude of 3000 meters many stop to look around and admire the Rift Valley.

If you go higher, the Bigo quagmire begins.

It is here that you can get caught up in the mud. When climbing even higher you can get to the eternal snows. This is the glacier of Helena. To continue the climb, climbing equipment is required.
Further, crossing the Stanlinsky plateau, you can reach the top of Margherita. This is the highest point of the Moon Mountains.
From this place climbers have an exciting picture of mountain peaks, forests, valleys, lakes and mountain streams.
Lovers of travel will surely draw here the fact that until the end of the Moon Mountains have not been studied.
Thank you.

Wow I have never heard of the Moon Mountains, and I had no idea there was any kind of snow around the Nile area. The surrounding Nature looks amazing. As a keen hiker thanks for bringing this to my attention.
