May 25th, 2018- Island Exploration at its finest {#SteemitChallenge Day 8 of 28--Part II}

in #travel8 years ago

Today was a lot of fun. After my morning A.M. run around the island and breakfast, we decided to walk around and see what we would stumble upon.

We trekked up a large flight of stone stairs and just over the other side appeared a beautiful beach and a brand new village in the distance, which we had no idea even existed. Aimlessly walking around is sometimes the best way to travel, as you will find the most random places of beauty.

The beach was relatively empty, so finding a spot in the shade was not a problem. We chilled here for awhile enjoying the cool, brisk breeze and the waves crashing up onto our feet.

After the beach, we caught the 5 o'clock bus that was heading up to the top of the main mountain on the island of Serifos. The one-way bus ticket cost was 1,80 Euro, which brought you right up near the top of the mountain. To get here, the bus had to make a number of 180 degree hairpin turns, many times stopping oncoming traffic.

The main attraction here is known as the Castle of Chora, which we came to find was more of a Church than a castle. The bus dropped us off at the stop and then we were on our own.

We found a set of stairs and decided to take this path. We had no idea where it lead, but we knew one thing for certain-- we were heading up.

We walked through the village streets (more like sidewalks than streets) passing by homes and small shops. Along the way were many perches and balconies with secret passage ways and little cubbyholes.

Most of these lead to people's homes, some of which were deserted and others that were not. It was quite an experience to say the least.

The trek consisted of a number of random twists and turns, which were really just educated guesses. If it came to a dead end, then we would just turn around and head in the opposite direction, until we reached the top.

The view from here was just spectacular, as you can see from the photo below:

The best part about the whole thing is that we were the only ones at the top, so we had the entire view to ourselves. In the summer, mainly July and August, the place is generally mobbed with travelers from all over the globe- the French, Italians, Americans, Australians, Germans, Chinese, you name it.

Tomorrow, we continue our island hopping, as we will be leaving Serifos at noon and heading for Sifnos.

Sifnos is supposed to be one of the nicest islands in the Cyclades, according to the Greece travel guru, Matt Barrett.

I can't wait to continue sharing my travel experiences with you all!

And you keep on saying "we", but there is only you in the photos. Who is the other person? 😉

so true!! always nice to run where you can enjoy your surroundings and also breathe in the nice fresh air off the sea.

AHAH, I was waiting for someone to comment about this-- I shall be revealing my travel companion at the end of my 28-day challenge-- for now the alias is known as, the one and only, Geets Romo.

Stay tuned !!

That's a long time to reveal the secret identity of your travel companion. You should at least show his hand 😋

There may be a photo today where you can see my travel companion in the distance.... I cannot promise anything, but, maybe.. just maybe

haha, new post coming in t-minus 30 minutes, my friend

Sidewalks, little shops, blue and white - to me, this looks perfect. I don't know what it is about it that I like so much.

The view from the top is amazing! It's also nice that is not crowded so you can take your time (and photos) fully enjoying the experience.

I'm glad you're having a great time exploring Greece (not to forget about delicious food as well, haha).

Keep sharing, my friend! :)

Yes, the sidewalks & buildings are so unique and the blue and white is pretty traditional for the Cyclades. They put stucco on the buildings and sidewalks to prevent them from cracking and eroding from water and rain-pretty original. This gives them the shimmering white tone that you see in photos on the internet.

the villages are all so beautiful and pretty clean for the most part. just gets a little gusty st times which blows a lot of dust and dirt around.

The view was incredible and having it to ourselves was even better. We specifically came at this time of year so we didn't have to deal with all the people and hustle and bustle-- pretty relaxing.

The FOOD has been stellar... I will have a post specifically dedicated to food here soon!!

Thanks for your support, as always, much love <3

Well I've just learned something new about how they protect building and sidewalks and I agree - it's pretty amazing and it does look lovely but most important, it keeps them protected. Thanks for sharing that info!

I think it's great that you decided to come at this time, Greece can get pretty crowded during the summer, most Serbian people go there on vacation and not to mention people from other countries.

I'm so looking forward to that food post! :D Gyros can be easily found here, but it's just not the same. :)

my pleasure, glad you learned something new!!
Yeah, Greece is a popular spot and is definitely among one of the top bucket list places in the world. A LOT of Europeans end up here because it is just so close, so easy and SO CHEAP for them... especially the italianos and french.

Gyros are just so delicious, can't wait to share my Greek food experiences with you!

See you :-)

thanks for the amazing post. I resteemed your post.

Hey thanks @bootcamp02 it is my pleasure! I am glad you enjoyed-- Looking forward to more travel experiences in the coming weeks
