In Copenhagen the easiest and most common way to get around is by bike! It is one of the most bicycle friendly cities of the world. Almost 37% of the inhabitants are using the bike to get to work, school or university every day.

Almost every street has a bike way with its own traffic lights. That are more people using the bike to get to work than in the entire USA. They cover 1,3 million kilometers every day by bike!! So it is a really healthy city :)

So knowing all that I figured that the best way to get to know the city would be by bike! :)
My friend obviously already had one and got me another one from her friend for this week, which was awesome!

We started at Nørrebro, where my friend lives. From there we went towards the city center crossing bridges and getting used to bikers rules like how to make a sign to stop, go left or right and what to be aware of regarding the traffic. Our first obligatory stop was at Nyhavn

1 New Harbour - Nyhavn

This is one of the most famous sights here in Copenhagen. The canal stretches from city enter to another Harbour and the sea. It contains brightly colored 17th and early 18th century townhouses and bars, cafes and restaurants.

There you can also see many historical wooden ships. Often the orchestra plays music here which creates a nice ambience. From this place you can also start a tour by boat to discover the city.

2 Castle Amalienborg + Church & Park

Here does queen Margrethe II. live with her family. It is a Palais with 4 buildings and a Church on the other sight. The castle contains a museum and every day at 12:00 you can see the guard change in front of the building.

Behind the building you get to the park with a little fountain. There you walk with a beautiful view of the sea until you get to the promenade in direction to the statue of the little mermaid.

3 The Little Mermaid - Langelinie

In (Danish: Den lille Havfrue) is a statue made of bronce by Edvard Eriksen. The sculpture is put on a rock by the waterside at a promenade. It weighs 175 kilograms and is 1.25 metres tall. The origin is H.C. Andersens story about the little mermaid which was the inspiration for Disneys Arielle.

Today it is a important tourist and also activist sight. Just the day I arrived it was painted red because of some protests. Now it already has been cleaned up :)

4 Opera House + Harbour

Following the promenade towards the city center you can see the opera house and another harbour before you get to Paper Island. It is the national opera house and has one of the most modern stages in the world. The building was a gift from Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller.

On our way to the next stop I took a video so you get an idea of the bicycle culture ;)

5 Paper Island - Papir Øen + Street Food

After all that sightseeing we went to the most perfect place to eat in all Copenhagen: Paper Island!! On the outside you can sit and already get a bit of food and drinks.

Before you get to the big hall you will pass by a project from Yoko Ono where you can make a wish, writing it down at a piece of paper and putting it on the trees.

Getting in the hall you will find a paradise of street food. Something I love really much about this city! Street food is everywhere and always delicious.

There are more than 80 different food stands from all over the world offering delicious things! Here a few pictures :)

In this hall I saw food from Italy, Brasil, Iceland, Denmark, Germany, Iran, Turkey, Greece, Argentina, Korea, Thailand, China, Japan, ... and a lot more! Vegan, Vegetarian, Fruit Juices, Gluten Free or normal... - Really good food. We ate some inside and had a coffee afterwards enjoying the view and the sun outside.

6 Bicycle Bridge - Fisketorvet

This is a bridge just built for bicycles, which is 4meters wide and 220 meters long. It starts at a shopping Mall and goes all the way over the water to the other side of the canal.

You have a beautiful view from up there and in less than 2 minutes you can cross the water, cycling between the buildings. From there you arrive directly at the next stop.

7 Islands Brygge

Again a Harbour region in the center of Copenhagen ;) A lot of people go swimming in the water, kayaking or rent a boat here. It is a really popular place in the city with a beautiful mix of modern and historical architecture.

We went to one of the parks to have a beer and a snack sitting very comfortable and enjoying the view, but there are also a lot of restaurants and cafés. Originally we wanted to rent a boat and explore the city on the water for a while but it was all booked out :(

8 Tivoli

From Islands Brygge you can walk to Tivoli, an amusement park with some beautiful places to recover, in the city center. It is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and I think the only one in the city center of a capital.

It opened in 1843 and got more and more fun rides ever since. At the moment there are 23 fun rides, rollercoasters, on stage (sometimes with live concerts), one chairoplane (80m high), 37 restaurants, several fountains and a chinese pagoda at Tivoli lake. When it gets dark the whole park is illuminated.

In the end of the day they did a big firework!

9 Assistens Cemetery - H.C. Anderson

The cemetery of Copenhagen seems more like a park and people use it that way. In the morning there are people practicing yoga and thai chi (with good weather) and in the evening you find people doing picnic there.

It is a very peaceful and calm cemetery with a lot of plants, flowering trees, nice smell and colors that reminds me of fairy tales. It is perfect for someone like Christian Anderson to find his last rest!

His fairy tales are unforgettable. I grew up with a lot of them like for example the little mermaid or the princess and the pea. - ingenious.

This cemetery has a very special and beautiful atmosphere!

10 Christiania + Christians Harbour

I already wrote a more detailed post about Christiania, because it is really hard to describe

"Freetown" Christiana is located in the center of Copenhagen. Is is the first autonomous community of hippies, activists and others, living in another city. The town counts ca. 850 inhabitants. Most of them do meditation, yoga , theater, graffiti, art or sell cloth, weed or hash.

It is mostly famous for pusher street, in which you can buy hash and marihuana. In Nemoland (a few meters further) you can listen to live concerts and sit comfortable at the park behind the stage, drinking a beer or having a picnic.

Not far away from this community you will find Christians Harbour, a Harbour built in 1618 from King Christian IV. It is a copy of the canal system in Amsterdam and very beautiful to look at.

11 Bispebjerg Cementery

On a sunny spring day, Bispebjerg Cemetery makes for a special excursion. People come from everywhere to take photos of one of the garden’s main attractions: the avenue of Japanese cherry trees that, when in bloom, form a spectacular long, pink tunnel.

It might seem strange to call a cemetery romantic, but at Bispebjerg it’s hard not to. The paths here are beautiful.

And, like all Danish cemeteries, it makes a valuable contribution to the world’s horticulture, as each grave has its own small, carefully tended garden. In Denmark, these are not spooky places.

Bispebjerg Cemetery’s own map not only marks the locations of the most important graves, but also where to find the most remarkable trees and avenues.

When the cemetery opened in the early 1900s, it was based on a novel idea: to burn the dead instead of burying them. As a result, the graves here frequently house urns, often in beautiful, communal facilities.

In the columbarium, urns stand on shelves. There are also plots for faiths other than Christian, including a special Buddhist section.

Copenhagen has a lot to offer! To be honest I didn´t know much about it when I went there, but now I am positively surprised and a big fan of this city! I will for sure come back some time!!!
