Ireland - Wild Atlantic Way - Beginning our road trip

in #travel8 years ago

IRELAND, West Coast

Our first blog will take you to Ireland a country known for its stunning scenery and home to Guinness!!

We have decided to do the famous wild Atlantic Way coastal road trip. This route will take us along the west coast of Ireland and maps out what to see and what to do along the way.

There is an app you can download to hep you find your way and will recommend places to stay/eat and visit, along with the hidden gems as they call it, locals have uploaded there little secret fabulous places to see. You can also purchase a wild Atlantic way passport which is a book that you can get stamped along your route at local post offices and tourist information centres.

At just 10 euros per passport i would highly recommend getting one as it adds an little more fun and additional goals to your journey. I have to admit i have become a little obsessed in collecting all 188 stamps! In doing so i will receive a certificate for my efforts. Who needs more sleep or food when you can get a new stamp to keep you going!! It's at this point i realise Joe probably should not have told me about this passport :) I'm way to excited about it than a grown up should be! :)

Glencar waterfall:

We came across a waterfall north of Sligo on our way to the west coast.

The waterfall is called Glencar waterfall and at 50ft high is an impressive one. I think the fact it had been raining most of the day helped in its grand appearance as the water was gushing down at top speed onto the limestone rocks bellow.

Only a 300ft walk from the parking lot it was not a trouble to get to at all, it would be easily accessible for wheelchairs and prams.

At the bottom of the trail up to the waterfall is a charming little coffee shop called the tea shed. Inside is a quaint little seating area with lots of kinck-knacs and souvenir , they also offer an array of sandwiches and drinks for a reasonable price.

I would recommend a visit if you are passing by as it was a nice break from driving with out too much walking in the rain.

'Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above Glen-Car,
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star,’

William butler Yeats - The stolen child
A poem inspired by these waterfalls.

Along the road from the Glencar waterfall there were other waterfalls coming off the mountain. Due to the weather conditions we were unable to fly our drone, but we managed to get this shot.
