MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM NYC! PART II: 🎁 Tiffany & Co., Bergdorf Goodman, Barney's New York & More!

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Season's Greetings Steemit Friends! 🎄

Allow me to begin by wishing you a very ❄️ MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR ❄️ from the BIG APPLE! 🗽🍎🎉

Is it strange to find visual display design and visual merchandising to be kind of... fascinating? I do. I guess I'm just a nerd like that.

I think it was that '80's cult romcom, 'Mannequin' that sparked my interest in the wondrous world of window dressing. I was seven when the movie debuted.

To imagine an impeccably dressed mannequin (like a young Kim Cattrall💃🏻) would come alive late at night, sneaking around the department store, causing all sorts of trouble was so much fun. Maybe, I was just easily amused!

Yet, in a way, the mannequins do come alive at night. Occasionally (verrry late in the evening), you'll get a lucky peek of the window dressers hard at work at the fancy flagship shops along Fifth and Madison Avenues.

And so, that leads me back to our late night holiday window walking tour! 🛍️

In my last post, we explored Rockefeller Center, gaped at the gargantuan Tree 🎄, watched ice skating at the Rink ⛸️, got a glimpse of the windows at Saks Fifth and took a brief breather at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel.

In Part II, we'll browse the windows of Tiffany & Co, Bergdorf Goodman, Gucci, Dolce and Gabanna and Barney's New York.

Fifth Avenue

mcst_xmas2_2.JPG

First, we'll stop to take a look-see at the UNICEF Snowflake ❄️ dangling high above the intersection of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. Once that big, sparkly snowflake arrives, you know it's Christmastime!

Just on the east side of the avenue is...

Tiffany & Co.

mcxmas2_3.GIF

Tiffany & Co. recently opened The Blue Box Cafe, just in time for the holiday rush. Before you browse for your next engagement ring, you can now have your 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' too! 🍩

Ooooo... I'm dying to know what the carat cake is like... Hehe!

mcxmas2_5.GIF

Now, let's have a closer look at the windows. It looks like they went with a winter-land theme this year... now, that's my kind of ice fishing! 💍

mcxmas2_4.JPG

Oh yes, dripping in 18K can be back breaking. Lemme lend you a helping hand, little man. I'll take a few of those Tiffany blue boxes for me... I mean, for you...

mcxmas2_7.GIF

The vault's open! 💎 Make a mad dash with those diamonds! 💎

mcxmas2_8.JPG

I had to save the best for last... ice sculpting the dazzling pièce de résistance... Jean Schlumberger's "Bird on a Rock". This design was first introduced in 1965. It showcases a simply spectacular 41.66 carat, cushion-cut aquamarine!

UP NEXT IS...

Bergdorf Goodman

mcxmas2_9.GIF

ALL THAT JAZZ! 🎼🎵🎵 The windows are off with a loud bang on 5th and 58th!

mcxmas2_10.JPG

The 2017 Bergdorf Goodman holiday windows are entitled "To New York With Love".

They "capture the city's appreciation for the visual arts, history, music, film and more by showcasing seven local organizations: American Museum of Natural History, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Museum of the Moving Image, The New York Botanical Garden, New York Philharmonic, New-York Historical Society and UrbanGlass."

The display above is the New York Philharmonic window...

mcxmas2_11.GIF

Without a doubt, this window is dedicated to the Museum of the Moving Image. 🎥

mcxmas2_12.JPG

The most "glamorous" window is up next. It's dedicated to the American Museum of Natural History. I think I might just have the perfect caption for it below...

mcxmas2_13.JPG

"Dancing with the Dinosaurs." 🦕💃🦕🏻

mcxmas2_14.JPG

Here, we have the New-York Historical Society window. The sculptures and paintings were created by artist Mark Gagnon. They're inspired by the objects from the collections of the museum and library.

Hmmmm.... I might need your help with this caption. How about we ad-lib? Okay, so, a bull 🐂 and a bear 🐻 walk into a colonial tavern and 🍻 (complete the sentence in the comments below!)...

mcxmas2_15.JPG

I think the caption for this should read, "In a New York Minute."

mcxmas2_16.JPG

"Harajuku Girls Just Want to Have Fun" 🌹👯🌹 at the New York Botanical Society window.

mcxmas2_17.JPG

A closet stuffed full with shoes 👠 and a moose head (or maybe a reindeer?), and yet,"I Have Nothing to Wear." 🙎‍

mcxmas2_18.JPG

My last but not least caption is simply, " 🤔".

UP NEXT IS...

Gucci (on Fifth Ave.)

mcxmas2_19.JPG

I'll be doling out awards for the next few windows. Gucci wins the ✨ Most Girly Award ✨...

Dolce & Gabbana (on Fifth Ave.)

mcxmas2_20.JPG

I love it when luxurious shoes and accessories are served up on a silver platter! Ah, and it appears that my little pinky wanted to say, "Hellooooo!"...

mcxmas2_21.JPG

Dolce wins the Most Yummy Award 🍰 🍇🌹. Sweet!

LAST STOP...

Barney's New York (on Madison Ave.)

mcxmas2_22.JPG

So, it's the norm that Barney's holiday windows are a wee bit "avant-garde". The 2017 windows are the "whimsical" creations designed in collaboration with the artist duo The Haas Brothers. Below is their description of this window...

"In the third Madison Avenue window, entitled “Millennium,” we come close to our present day, but with the Haas’ creations standing in for humans. Their furry creatures interact with digital screens in a forest setting strewn with glittering poppies. The central message of the window is that, even as fear and greed seep into the world, we can choose to embrace love and compassion, fueling hope for a change. The fate of the world lies in our hands, and it’s up to each of us to decide what kind of future we’ll create...”

Ummm... okkaayyyy....

mcxmas2_24.GIF

This window is the Primordial display and according to The Haas Brothers, "it looks at the beginnings of life on our planet."

Unfortunately, glittering poppies and primordial ooze (although, very groovy!) just doesn't inspire me to do much holiday shopping.

Barney's New York wins both the Most Trippy and Most WTF awards for 2017!

What a terrific series this is @michellectv! Not only were the animated videos fantastic, and really capture the feel of the whole thing, your commentary taught me at least a few things that I didn't know, and/or didn't even realize when I first saw these displays! Kudos to you for the great posts! :)

As for the bull and bear, that'd be my guess, unless it's some sort of twisted scene right out of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream! lol

As for the Elmo and Cousin It, I thought that could be from the children's book, "Where the Wild Things Are"...

But upon second thought, "Cousin It" seems more fitting!

Thanks so much @alexpmorris! And lulz, at the "Elmo" and "Cousin It" reference. And yes, their style is like a mashup of Sendak and Dr. Seus!

I didn't include this in the post (it was already long enough) but I'll post it here for those who are interested in learning more about how the creative teams conceptualize / develop / produce the fantasical displays!

Barney's New York 2017 Holiday Windows:

Tiffany & Co.:

Bergdorf Goodman:

very cool, interesting to see a bit into their "process" of creating the window designs as well! :)

Obvi, I thought so too ; )

here's one for Bergdorf's 2017 windows too (longer version):

It's amazing that it takes 11 months to create the holiday windows! Wow! I feel so lucky that they're so close to home...

yeah, but I've gotta say, while it was interesting to learn that the Yankees, NFL logo, and even the logo on the back of the U.S. dollar were all originally Tiffany designs, besides that wow was that one "shilly" promo piece! lol

Haha! Well, promo pieces tend to be that way!

You are indeed the spy that stayed out in the cold, to tickle our eyes and our brains with all the beautiful scenes that you so excellently documented in Part 1 and Part 2. Although I live in Manhattan, it has been many Christmas times since I ventured into the realms that you photographed. Now I don't feel that I'm missing anything, and I still don't have to leave the house. Baby, its cold outside! Many thanks and happy new year.

I'm glad I braved the cold on your behalf, @domo ... and that you were able to live vicariously through my pictures. Wishing you and yours a joyous New Year!

NYC is a true winter wonderland during the holidays. Thanks for the share, this one is making me wax nostalgic. It's been too long since I've been back!

Yes, if you're up for the cold, Manhattan is magical during the holidays! ; )

Happy new year, @michellectv! I see in another post that you've been to Barcelona, Spain, you definitely need to visit Portugal (if you haven't already) if you want to see a wonderful country. Lisbon is regularly voted as one of the best cities and even Madonna is now living here! :D

Oh yes, I hear many lovely things about Portugal. Best wishes for a Happy New Year to you @gamingstation!

Fantastic pics. I loved seeing so much color and lights. You have also done an excellent job with those gifs

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the gifs @zinkly. I wasn't sure if they would be overkill! ; )

Such an awesome post I love these shop window displays I took some photos of them but early morning cool seeing your shots and videos

Oh fantastic! I'd imagine the verrryyy early am would be a great time to get really close to the windows with fewer people around.

yes indeed any other time the crowds get crazy

May this festive season sparkle and shine, may all of your wishes and dreams come true, and may you feel this happiness all year round. Merry Christmas!

Sparkles all year round sounds good to me! Happy New Year!

One of the best #christmas posts..... Wishing you a happy new year with all the prosperity in the world! @michellectv

Thanks a bunch @taqi! And the same to you for 2018!

Hi @michellectv Merry Christmas too from PH here ^^.

Merry Christmas to you too @tiffanyrej!

Gotta love a good window shopping session. Great write-up!

Thank you @travelersmemoire!
