Did you know: Kaunas Castle

in #travel7 years ago

Kaunas Castle is the oldest brick castle in Lithuania. It stands next to Kaunas city, the second biggest city in the country. The first appearance in old chronicles was at 1361.
The first brick castles in Lithuania started to appear in 14th century, they were built by skilled german builders. The first brick castle was built in 14th century, and it was the Kaunas castle. It was the most important spot when defending against the Teutonic Order.
In March, 1362, the Teutons demolished the castle, but quickly after that, the castle was rebuilt.

After the Grunwald battle in 1410, the castle lost its strategic location(there were no one to fight), and the Grand Duke Vytautas used the Castle for meetings and he liked to stay here.

Today, you can take a tour here.

Cool I've always wanted to go check out Lithuania, may have to see if theres a cheap flight from Denmark one day! Nice picture as well :)

I see that the prices from Copenhagen to Kaunas are about 20 euros, if you ever consider visiting, try to go at Autumn or Spring, the country looks best at these!

Yeah doesn't seem too expensive thats for sure. Thats one think I love about europe is how cheap it is to travel!

Cant say the same about Canada.

Lovely post, makes me I wish I could visit Lithuania right away- the castle is sure is fascinating :)
