Random pictures: the 'Romanian road trip' edition

In early-mid August 2017, we took a week-long road trip covering most of Romania’s weirdest destinations. I’m still working on the best ways to write about these places (one super-big post? a lot of little posts? Yes, even after nine years I’m still asking questions like this..), so until they’re ready, enjoy some photos.

One thing you have to watch for as you travel through Romania are the parking lots. There’s typically ample places to park for free, but that doesn’t stop paid parking lots from appearing first.

Yep, I stepped in mud at the mud volcano. Not a proud moment. (There’s a large water tank with spigot to wash your feet off just outside the entrance.)

Brasov may not be Hollywood, but the area has been used in films like Cold Mountain and the History Channel mini series Hatfield & McCoys. You can take a cable car and short hike to the letters if you want.

Seen at Rasnov Fortress – yes, it’s a modern recreation of a cannon, but turning it into a trash can is cute…

Go ahead, Photoshop yourself in! Seen at the Muzeul ASTRA, the largest open-air museum in the country, nearby some of the many traditional houses being preserved.

Taking second place in the ‘tackiest souvenir contest’: these various shirts seen in multiple places around Romania…

First place in the ‘tacky souvenir’ contest? Yep, that’s a ~20cm statue of Dracula sucking blood from a naked woman. Classy.

So we’re just driving along a random Romanian backroad (the sort that connects lots of smaller cities) when out comes this enormous set of fork and knife. Like 6-7 meters tall… Of course I stopped and got a picture with it…

Funny, I didn’t know Tom and Jerry were into pizza… Seen at a hotel in Hunedoara.

We now enter the part of the post where we can’t help but laugh at some of the city names we came across. The city Vulcan, for example…

The city of Beclean, complete with the red slash to indicate you’re leaving the city.

Carpenis? Oh myy…

Pui, or the Romanian word for ‘chicken’? Yup, that’s a city.

Lazaresti? Maybe the city came back from the dead or something…

Carpinis? OK, maybe a little silly, but it made us chuckle…

A couple more pictures about Romania, if you’re thinking about taking your own road trip:

Yep, those are sheep. Probably a couple of hundred, generally being guided by a shepherd across the road…

A few more animals using the road alongside the bikers, pedestrians, and of course the other cars. Drive safe!
