Visiting Devon House

in #travel7 years ago

This Georgian-style house was built in 1881 and is located in the heart of Kingston. It is one of Jamaica’s Heritage Sites.
The house was built for Gorge Stiebel, who was Jamaica’s first black millionaire. Gorge Stiebel was born from a German Jew and a Jamaican housekeeper. He was a carpenter, shipper and gun-runner. He found his fortune in Venezuela after he invested in a gold mine. (Well maybe in some time we steemians will have our own mansion after having invested in steem :))

The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens. There are green lawns, palm trees, beautiful flowers and a water fountan. The atmosphere is very soothing and calm.
The surrounding buildings (the old stables, the kitchen and other buildings on the property) have been rebuild and now host some of Jamaica’s finest restaurants, confectioneries, souvenir shops, art boutiques and cafés.
There is also a bakery where the food is baked in an old style brick oven which gives a very special flavor to the baked food.

Different facilities at Devon House, at the left you can see the bakery.

The ice cream shop "I Scream" is very famous and really makes you want to scream due to its numerous and delicious flavours.
