Travel Gem #16: Guess how old this Pelican is in Mykonos / 认识这些可爱的鹈鹕

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemit Friends,

When you come to Mykonos, you will be greeted by this lovely pelican.  He proudly stands there to welcome you to this island.  Be sure to watch out for him when you get off the ferry as he lives close to the waterfront.

Later on, we discovered that this pelican has a name.  He is close to 60 years old already. Wow.  The Mykonos islanders call him Petros in Greek meaning 'rock'.  It is the English name Peter.

So aside from the magnificent windmills, this is the most popular tourist attraction on the island.

Travel Gem Hint:  Make it your point to meet this pink pelican in person.  Head towards the Agai Anna Beach at the harbour and you will find him there in the afternoon. There are 3 of them but only Petros is the active one.   They don't always come out but in the afternoon, you will find them coming out for their sun tan!   This is a great time to take pictures with them.

Look how he loves to take poses for you!

He is waiting for us to buy him a beer!

Be sure to take pictures with the pelican in Mykonos.  It is a great momento.

Have fun,

Rosa

Wow the famous Petros i'm happy who is alive yet!
Edit: The original Petros died in 1985, i will try to post the story about that.

Yes the original Petros never recovered and died in 1985. According to what this man told us sitting by the shore. he said this pelican is named after the original Peter. He spoke Greek and broken English and we understood a little bit of Greek. His English sounds "Greek" to us but we were able to get a conversation going. There are actually 3 of them and the other 2 were in hiding. I am not sure how they got these pelicans there after the original Petros died.

He's 60?! I had no idea they could get that old! That's so cool :D

Interesting. I'm Greek and never knew about this pelican. I want to meet him!

I have only met them in Mykonos island and nowhere else. Go to Mykonos island.
