A few weeks ago, I visited a Belgian tourist site, The Fortress Eben-Emael, which was built to defend the land from the German attack through a narrow strip of Dutch territory, in the 1930s.
It was the largest in the world in its time, built mostly underground, with 1200 soldiers installed, 24 cannons from 60-120mm, underground 4km of tunnels and corridors.

It became known in 1940, when a small group (78) of the German parachuters disabled it in 15 minutes. An impressive architectural creation, but totally useless for the intended purpose.
Now it's a tourist attraction.
