On the northwestern border of Rutog County in Ngari Prefecture, Tibet, Pangong Lake lies like a long-necked swan nestled among the mountains. Its most renowned feature is Bird Island, the world's highest-altitude bird habitat and a vibrant hidden gem of the western Tibetan Plateau. This small island, over 300 meters long and 200 meters wide, sits at an altitude of 4242 meters on the lake's surface. Its unique ecological environment and tranquil atmosphere have made it a breeding paradise for tens of thousands of waterbirds.

The vitality of Bird Island stems from the magical gift of Pangong Lake's "two states in one lake." The lake is long and narrow from east to west. The eastern section within my country is freshwater, clear and teeming with aquatic plants, abundant with plateau schizothorax fish; the western section, controlled by India, is saltwater and barren. The abundant freshwater supply and the lake's fish provide ample food for the birds, while the natural barriers surrounding the island isolate it from external disturbances, creating a peaceful environment free from predators. The island is devoid of tall trees, covered only with low shrubs and wild grasses. Thick layers of bird droppings accumulate on the pebble beach, and feathers and bird eggs are scattered everywhere, showcasing its pristine, wild beauty.

May to September is the peak season for Bird Island. Warm air currents from the Bay of Bengal sweep across the plateau, drawing flocks of birds back from their winter retreats. More than 20 species, including bar-headed geese, brown-headed gulls, and ruddy shelducks, gather here, with numbers reaching tens of thousands at their peak. They circle low over the lake, their wings slicing through the azure waters; they nest and lay eggs among the grass and rocks, the eggs so densely packed that one must walk carefully around them; they swoop down to hunt, splashing water everywhere. The sounds of birdsong and flapping wings intertwine, reflecting against the snow-capped mountains and lake waters, creating a magnificent natural panorama.

This hidden gem possesses both ecological value and a strong sense of border life. As the core scenic area of Pangong Lake National Forest Park, Bird Island's well-preserved ecology is thanks to strict protection and the silent guardianship of border guards. Legends of dragons and lake monsters circulate among the herdsmen along the lake, adding a touch of mystery to Bird Island; the mani stones and prayer flags fluttering in the wind bear witness to the locals' reverence for nature. During the boat trip to the island, one can enjoy panoramic views of the lake embraced by snow-capped mountains, gaze at the vast border in the distance, and feel the fusion of nature and national sentiment.

Today, Bird Island retains its pristine beauty, untouched by excessive commercialization. Standing here, gazing up at thousands of birds soaring in unison and looking down at the crystal-clear lake, one can truly appreciate the harmony between life and nature. This is not only a paradise for birds but also the most captivating ecological landmark on the western Tibetan border, immersing every visitor in its purity and grandeur.
