A Day Out at Acapulco's Mercado Central (Photo Blog)

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Today my fam and some friends ventured over to Acapulco's Mercado Central, a sprawling series of market vendors and tiendas. This place was big and full of all sorts of interesting things and places to explore.

Enjoy my photo blog of this awesome day!

One of the many entrances to the mercado.

Spices, spices, and more spices. The multitude of different smells present in the market was quite memorable and at times overwhelming.

The fruits and veggies looked extremely fresh.

Scattered throughout the market were a handful of make-shift arcades.

I sat down to eat and Menudo Esperanza, a family run food stand in the massive food court at the market. The menudo tasted amazing although it appears to have included not only trip, the lining of a cows stomach, which I'm used to, it also included what looked to be lamb skin with the hooves intact. Yikes! The service was amazing and the vendors were very friendly and talkative.

Here's where the rest of the group ate.

Sushi!!!

Jesus was well represented at the market.

The Buddha made an appearance as well.

And there was this creepy skeleton.

The market had different sections. The shoe section was huge!

This was one of many pet shops. Some of the pets weren't living in the best conditions.

Tons of herbal blends. Some were used to deal with inflammation and treat insomnia.

Parking at the market was pretty much spontaneous order. When we landed on a "sort of" spot our friend Paul, whose been living in Mexico for a year, encouraged us to remove the license plate as when the police ticket you for parking in a non-spot, they also take your plates.

When we went to get more water out of the car, we discovered a ticket on the window.

Sure enough, the plate was gone!

One of the wildest parts of our day was checking out the meat market. It is not a place where I would want to buy meat however the food we ate for lunch likely came from here and much of the food we eat from the street vendors is probably sourced from here as well.

Chicken heads.

Beef pieces with flies buzzing all around them. Flies were everywhere.
20180317_161944.jpg

There were many cats laying about.

I wanted to capture both the beauty of the market and also it's underbelly.

There were many stands selling chickens. Probably not the happiest chickens.

I imagine there are scores and scores of rats living in and around the market. If I were a rat, I would love it here!

More pet stores. We almost bought Bill a Chihuahua since his was likely eaten by a coyote a year ago. They were so small we could have carried him on our flight. Maybe when we return.

There were lots of fish stores.

Paul is young at heart and took some time to play with the ninos at the market.

Bill joined in too.

Bunnies, bunnies, and more bunnies!

I felt bad for these ducks.

Surrounding the main building of the market was block and block of small stores and more market spaces. It was incredible large and sprawling. Entrepreneurship is thriving in Acapulco!

Ugh, those animal conditions are not cool - those rabbits couldn't even move!
I was looking for this place when we were there and we could not find it!!

Wish I'd been there. I was close to getting tickets but in the end (excuse excuse excuse). Been enjoying all the aftermath of Anarchapulco, including Berwick's interviews.
