VARNI Southern Wickery, interesting community at Thalay Noi, in Phatthalung province
Further to my previous post, there is a small community at Thalay Noi that supplies Southern Wickery.
In the swamp of Thalay Noi, there are abundance of native sedges, which is locally called “Krajood”. In the past, we considered Krajood as just worthless weeds which we normally cut off and allowed to decompose naturally.
But with the wisdom of the local people in the community, the Krajood began to be used as a material for making craft items.
They produce various craft items from Krajood under the community brand “VARNI Southern Wickery”.
These local products from Krajood have excellent quality, awesome designs and beautiful colors.
In addition, these local products from Krajood are soft, tough, durable and suitable for making various types of weaving products, i.e. small household items, bags, basket, mat, etc.
I do really love the wisdom of the local people in the community; i.e. these products come from Krajood which are easily found in Thalay Noi and the making process does not cause any harm to health or the environment at all.
It’s great that you can learn how to make Krajood basketry during your visit there.
These local products from Krajood can generate more income to the community.
