Most locals exist on subsistence farming or fishing along the coast of their island home.

Years of occupation, war and strife left this small country lacking infrastructure and development when they became independent in 2002.

Driving past scenes of hardy fishermen wading out into crystal blue waters from white sandy beaches may look idyllic from afar, but the reality of living in Timor-Leste must be far from paradise.
