Cycling California, Emerald Bay Lake Tahoe

in #travelfeed6 years ago

Hello all, this is my road bike ride yesterday to Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe CA. The island in the middle of the bay is named Fannette island and was built when the bay was privately owned. There is a structure on the top of the island that was a tea house, but all that is left is 4 walls.

Many tourists and boats visit this particular area of Lake Tahoe for it's natural beauty. (Me included) =)

My ride was from the southern area of Lake Tahoe to Emerald Bay. Round trip was 28 miles and 1300 feet of climbing, one particular section is steep leading up to inspiration point overlooking the bay.

GPS data is from a Garmin Vivoactive HR and uploaded to Strava

The first climb up the southwestern side gives you a great view of south shore

At the same area looking north east. It was a nice day for a ride at 60*f or so. Much better than the day before as there were wind gusts up to 40 mph...

A bike shot,......I got honked at just after snapping this shot as I was standing in the middle of the road. There was construction going on and they were stopping traffic so I thought that I had more time...

On the way back, I stopped at Bijou bike park which has a variety of pump tracks and jumps. It's nice that South Lake Tahoe supports cyclists of all types and helped build this park. I road it a few years ago, actually just rolled around on the pump track.

I finished my ride at stateline and saw some huge horses pulling a carriage. I asked the guy what type of horses they were and he said they were Belgian horses.

He mentioned that they weighed 2400 lbs! These horses are really huge, at least 1.5x a 'normal' horse.

At stateline, you can see the sign where the state of Nevada starts. Slot machine gambling in California is illegal, but in Nevada it is legal and casinos are a few feet after the sign. So if you look at Lake Tahoe, it is in two states, California and Nevada.

If you have a chance to visit California, Lake Tahoe should be near the top of the places to visit. (Skiing and Snowboarding at a lot of resorts in the winter)

Hi travelfeed, thanks for visiting the blog and the vote! Glad you enjoyed the post.

that looks absolutely stunning! And the bike pic is great, taken while risking your own life!

Thanks! Most of the cars at this area are going pretty slow since there is usually heavy traffic. I've cycled around the lake 3 times, it's 72 miles and 4k of climbing. Something you may want to try if you visit...

sounds great! 4k of climbing for 72 miles is hectic!

That photo was well worth getting honked at! The cool blue lake and the blue bidons on the bike look good together

Matching colors!

Thank you for the recommendation I'll check it out!

Wow, such awesome places. i would love to visit california one day!

There is a lot to see here, from Los Angles area to Northern CA

The lake looks beautiful... I liked the southwestern side view... Looks awsome... In winter it must be beauty too...

You can do an image search for winter at tahoe, there is snow everywhere
