Fortitude
Over the Gap?
One second past midnight. We might already be dead.

Tick Tick Tick. Boom!
The "Doomsday Clock" is not a real clock but a powerful metaphor, created in 1947 by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to warn the public how close humanity is to global catastrophe . It was conceived by a group of Manhattan Project scientists—including Albert Einstein and J. Robert Oppenheimer—who, having helped develop the atomic bomb, felt a deep responsibility to educate the public about the existential dangers of their creation . The clock's imagery was designed by artist Martyl Langsdorf, who set the first clock at seven minutes to midnight simply because "it looked good to my eye" .

Initially, the decision to move the clock was made by Bulletin editor Eugene Rabinowitch until his death in 1973 . Today, it is set by the Science and Security Board, a group of experts in nuclear technology, climate science, and other fields, who consult with a Board of Sponsors that includes numerous Nobel Laureates . They meet twice annually to assess global threats, considering factors like nuclear weapons stockpiles, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, and emerging technologies .

Since 1947, the clock has been reset 27 times . Here are some of its most notable moments:

1949 (3 minutes to midnight): The first reset occurred after the Soviet Union tested its first atomic bomb, officially beginning the nuclear arms race .
1953 (2 minutes to midnight): The clock reached its then-closest point after both the U.S. and Soviet Union tested hydrogen bombs within nine months of each other .
1963 (12 minutes to midnight): It was moved back following the signing of the Partial Test Ban Treaty, which limited atmospheric nuclear testing .
1991 (17 minutes to midnight): This is the farthest the clock has ever been from midnight, reflecting the end of the Cold War and the signing of the first Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) .
2020 (100 seconds to midnight): The clock moved to seconds for the first time, citing the end of the INF Treaty, increased U.S.-Iran tensions, and inaction on climate change .
2023 (90 seconds to midnight): The clock was pushed forward due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the increased risk of nuclear escalation .
January 2026 (85 seconds to midnight): As of today, this is the closest the clock has ever been to midnight. The Bulletin cited the threat of nuclear war, the climate crisis, and the unchecked proliferation of AI technology fueling misinformation .

So, while the Doomsday Clock is "imaginary," its movements reflect very real judgments by some of the world's foremost experts on our collective peril.
The Doomsday Clock is currently set at 85 seconds to midnight. This is the closest it has ever been to “midnight”—which symbolizes global catastrophe.
It was moved closer this year for a handful of excuses, I mean reasons.

  1. Rising nuclear tensions. Growing rivalry among nuclear-armed powers such as the United States, Russia, and China. Weakening or expiring nuclear arms-control treaties. Continued risk of escalation in conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war.
  2. Artificial intelligence and information warfare. Rapid deployment of AI without global governance. AI being used to generate disinformation and destabilize political systems.
  3. Climate change. Increasing extreme weather and insufficient global action to reduce emissions. Climate stress interacting with geopolitical tensions.
  4. Biological and technological threats. Concerns about biotechnology misuse and future pandemics. Lack of international rules governing emerging technologies.
  5. Declining international cooperation. The board emphasized that global cooperation is weakening, making it harder to address existential threats collectively.
So my friends, I guess we are all doomed. Note, the reasons the clock is set to a two-minute warning are all due to humans. Who created the clock. Remember. It’s not a real clock.
