EMRAKUL

Magic: The Gathering II

When the contest was announced by Lars Kommienezuspadt, I resteemed it and said right away that this is just up my alley: I am a huge fan of Lovecraft, and had drawn my version of Cthulhu way back in 1980 - posted on Steemit a year ago:

About Emrakul

Magic - The Gathering Emrakul, the "Aeons Torn," is one of the three Eldrazi titans and the inspiration for the Zendikari merfolk god Emeria. Emrakul is the Titan of Corruption, the largest and most fearsome of the Eldrazi. She does not affect inorganic matter - rocks, water, etc. - but twists all things living, be they plants, animals or other sentient beings. She causes silent terror wherever she soars, embodying desolation, emotional and physical distance, the chill of the void, and the terror of being alone. The Emrakul lineage is characterized by flesh-like lattice structures, uneasy bilateral symmetry, and tentacles that end in knobby, vestigial digits. Looking like spongy, alien baleen, the lattice respires independent of the Eldrazi herself, supporting a host of unseen mite—creatures within. Some within this lineage, including Emrakul herself, float above the ground, using unknown powers to alter the surrounding gravity. ~ https://mtg.gamepedia.com/Emrakul

... and now, the sad part ...
😥

I screwed up after I took the last picture of the finished work: I was going to spray it with fixative when I accidentally grabbed a bottle of matt varnish. It clouded it. I have to figure out a way to rework it.
Maybe I should leave well enough alone when I am already tired.
Now I am debating if I should paint it. I would not slavishly do the same, just the basic idea. I can't do the same, it is boring. If I am bored, I don't do good work.

My friend Peter Gric suggested I should post the screwed up piece.
Right now I don't have a photo of it,
but I go to the studio later today and take a photo.
Stay tuned until then, I will post it here in edit.

Peter says: "yes, show that shit happens some times."

UPDATE:
I went to the studio yesterday (January 31st) to survey the damage and found it was bad, but not so bad that it cannot be salvaged.

I also used a better camera, my trusted Canon SX540HS for a better image.
This is straight out of the camera, just the file-size has been reduced.

I will be restoring some lost details and highlights, using charcoal stick and a white acrylic pen (trying to wipe off the matte varnish caused a grey film, as well as loss of fine detail).
Lesson learned: Don't rush things, stay focused, if tired, quit.
Shit happens, but it shouldn't!

I looked through your website and your artwork is stunning! I love the themes and symbolism used . I think your drawing of Emrakul is amazing, and although you seem to be more detail oriented than I am, I must say, don't be so unforgiving of yourself. As Bob Ross would say, there are no mistakes, just happy accidents!

thank you - I try to make the best out of my "happy accident" - it was not as bad as initially thought. I work on it some more, transformative, it looks a bit different than the original, and more changes will be made to highlight what has been grey-washed by my mistake.

great, thank you vey much!

Ohhh, sorry to hear that ... it was a great work 🌻

I get over it, not the first time I screwed up. Thanks for the upvote!

Man, this is a hell of a creature. Star War directors and producers should contact you if they want some really unique creatures.
I thought it was digital when I first saw it.
So detailed, so many textures and shapes. Amazing work. Pity it got damaged at the end. At least we got this version saved.
You should be proud of your gift. It's really impressive

Thank you for your kind words. It is all a product of decades of practice. As for the film industry: I have a friend who works for Lucas and had worked for Star Wars, and it is not all roses. You have to work to specs, and even if they don't use it, you are not free to publish your work, it belongs to them. I am a free artist, and like to remain free. It took Giger a long time to even get recognition for the Alien. They would not even put him in the credits on the original first Alien movie. Working under pressure and to a timeline is not my thing either. I can only do good work if I am convinced of the project - as I was with this one, a fascinating subject that was like tailormade for me.

I understand. That's sad. Can't blame you for not wanting to work for them. Why do they have to be such pricks? That's so dishonest. I did not know Giger's credits had been previously denied (he got so many accolades for his designs in Alien).
From some of the biopics I have watched around the life and works of actors and directors, itlooks like movie-making is a rather capricious inustry whose final products are a real miracle considering all the drama and conflicts that led to them.
Well, I wish you a very long-lasting, prolific, and always independent career

the accolades came from all sides for Giger, which finally forced their hand in giving him credit, and for the sequels actually pay him what he was worth!

great to see the process Otto! Love this one!
