The network fork governance and blockchain protocol upgrades are highly significant components of blockchain systems development and enhancement. A blockchain is not a permanent entity.

With time, developers and the community discover improved methods of ensuring the network is faster, safer, and more useful. It is here that protocol upgrades come in.

A blockchain protocol is nothing more than the guidelines under which the given network operates. They bring an upgrade when individuals feel the need to enhance these rules. I regard protocol upgrades as a form of problem fixing and addition of new features.

As an example, upgrades may lead to a lower cost of transaction, better security or more speed. The changes may not be acceptable to everyone in the network though. It is at this point when things get serious.

In some cases, the network can be divided into two, in case of a disagreement. This is referred to as fork. Forks are commonly divided into two; soft forks and hard forks.

A small change that does not yet obsolete old versions of the software is a soft fork. But a big change that makes a new and distinct blockchain is a hard fork. Hard forks are incredibly intriguing to me as it may result in the production of a totally new cryptocurrency.

Decisions are made through governance in blockchain. It is also decentralized as opposed to the traditional systems whereby a single authority is in control of the system.

This implies that anyone, developers, miners, and users have a voice. I think this is what is so special about blockchain, and it also makes decision-making slow and challenging. Before changes are introduced, people need to negotiate, vote and consent.

In a few instances, government may be contentious. Failure to reach an agreement by the community may result in division and confusion. I have observed that a lot of trust is involved here. Upgrades become easier when the users have confidence in the developers and the process. However, lower the trust level, the more conflicts occur.

To conclude, blockchain protocol improvements and fork governance are required to grow, which are accompanied by difficulties. In my opinion, effective communication, fairness, and community engagement has to be present to ensure the success of blockchain in the long term. This will aid the network to expand without disintegration.
