Among all the technologies available to keep cryptocurrency or digital assets safe, the most reliable and invulnerable means is 'Hardware Wallet'. It is basically a pen drive or a small physical device that stores the secret key or private key of your crypto assets completely offline. There is a common saying in the crypto world—"If you don't control your private key, then the crypto is not yours." Hardware wallets ensure 100% control and ownership over that private key to the user.

How it works

Typical mobile apps or computer software wallets are always connected to the internet, making it easy for hackers to attack them with malware or phishing links. But a hardware wallet works completely offline or without an internet connection, which is technically called 'cold storage'. When you want to make a transaction, this physical device has to be connected to your mobile or computer via USB cable or Bluetooth. The most interesting thing is that even after connecting to an internet-connected device, your private key is never exposed to the computer or the internet. The digital signature of the transaction is completed in a specialized secure chip (Secure Element) inside the device and only that authorized signature is returned to the computer or mobile. As a result, even if your computer is infected with a dangerous virus or malware, it is still impossible for a hacker to touch the funds inside your hardware wallet.

Recovery Phrase and Physical Security

When setting up a hardware wallet, the user is given a secret 'recovery phrase' or seed phrase of 12 to 24 words. These words have to be written on a piece of paper and hidden very safely. If for some reason your physical hardware wallet is lost, stolen or broken, your cryptocurrency will not be lost. You can recover all your funds in an instant by entering those backup words in any new hardware or software wallet on the market. However, if someone else knows this backup phrase, they can steal all your assets from anywhere in the world. In addition, to keep the device secure, a PIN code is used inside it, which locks the device if typed incorrectly. Ledger and Trezor are the two most popular hardware wallet brands on the market.

Conclusion

In short, hardware wallets are the highest level of crypto security. Although these devices cost a lot of money to buy and are not as fast or convenient as software wallets for instant trading or transactions, there is no alternative to keeping crores of digital assets 100% safe from hacking and online scams. Using a hardware wallet is a very wise thing to do for long-term investors and large crypto holders. Today's discussion concludes here. I hope you've found it interesting.
