In the decentralized world of blockchain and cryptocurrency, the only key to maintaining 100% ownership and backup of your digital assets is the 'Secret Recovery Phrase', commonly known as the 'Seed Phrase'. It is usually a specific list of 12 to 24 random words, which are generated by a cryptographic algorithm to create a master private key. This seed phrase is the only way to recover your crypto wallet or access your funds on any new device. Since there is no 'forgot password' option or central support team in blockchain, if this phrase is lost or misplaced, the digital assets are lost forever. Therefore, keeping the seed phrase extremely secure, secret, and properly stored is the most important responsibility for any crypto user. The first and foremost rule of storing the seed phrase is to keep it 100% away from any kind of digital and online medium. Writing down the seed phrase on a mobile phone or computer notepad, saving it in email, drive, social media or any cloud storage is very dangerous. Even taking a screenshot or picture of the seed phrase is not safe, because digital information on an online device can be stolen instantly through malware, spyware or hacking attacks. The seed phrase should always be stored in an analog or offline medium, where there is no internet connection. The primary and most widely used method of offline storage is to write it down on paper. The 12 or 24 words that appear on the screen while creating a wallet should be written down on an offline piece of paper with the exact spelling and in the correct order. To make the paper last longer, it can be stored in a waterproof cover or laminated in a secret place (such as a safe deposit box or fireproof vault). However, the main limitation of paper is that it can deteriorate with fire, water or time. The best way to stay safe from this natural disaster is to write or punch the seed phrase on a 'metal wallet' or stainless steel and titanium plate. Steel metal wallets can withstand extreme temperatures, fire, water or corrosion, so the seed phrase remains intact for generations. To further increase security, 'geographical redundancy' or keeping backups in multiple locations is an effective strategy. It is wise to store a single seed phrase in two secure locations rather than keeping the entire paper or metal plate in one place. However, you should not cut any part of the seed phrase and keep it in two places, as this can create confusion when taking a backup. For additional security, you can use a multi-signature wallet or add a secret 'passphrase' (25th word) to the seed phrase, which keeps the funds safe from thieves even if the original phrase is stolen. Ultimately, the adage in the crypto world, "Not your keys, not your coins," highlights the importance of seed phrases. Storing your own seed phrases offline, in a safe place, or in secure custody, without relying on a third party, is what ensures true freedom and security for your digital assets.
