What are Altcoins?
Assalamu Alaikum
Bitcoin is the first and undisputed leader in the vast empire of cryptocurrencies. However, apart from Bitcoin, there are more than 20,000 different digital currencies currently on the market, collectively known as altcoins. The word "altcoin" is basically a combination of the words "alternative" and "coin". In other words, anything that has been invented as an alternative to Bitcoin is an altcoin. Since the first altcoin called 'namecoin' came out in 2011, this world has been constantly expanding.
Although Bitcoin gave the idea of a digital currency, it had some limitations. For example, its blockchain network is quite slow, it consumes a lot of electricity, and it is basically limited to storing or transacting assets. Developers wanted to create something that would work faster than Bitcoin, be environmentally friendly, and be able to perform various complex tasks (such as creating smart contracts or apps) beyond transactions. This goal gave rise to powerful altcoins like Ethereum, Solana, or Cardano. Altcoins can be divided into several main categories based on the main categories of altcoins, their purpose, and technology. The coins of the smart contract platform (Layer-1) serve as the foundation of a large network. Such as Ethereum (ETH). It is possible to create thousands of other projects and tokens based on this. Stablecoins These coins are created to reduce the volatility of the crypto market. Their value is usually kept equal to 1 US dollar. Such as: Tether (USDT) or USDC. They are mainly used to protect against inflation or market collapse. These tokens are required to use a specific app or service. For example: BNB is used to pay fees on the Binance exchange. Meme coins are usually popular based on internet jokes or celebrity hype without any strong technology. For example: Dogecoin or Shiba Inu. These are the most risky. And governance tokens are tokens that give their owners the power to vote on the future decisions of a specific crypto project. For example: Uniswap (UNI).
Altcoins are like "Aladdin's Lamp" for investors. Because altcoins have a lower market cap than Bitcoin, their prices have the potential to increase very quickly. A quality altcoin can make an investor's money 10 to 100 times in a few months. Especially when the price of Bitcoin is stable, the "Altseason" begins, when altcoins start to run at a meteoric speed. However, we should not forget its dark side. Altcoins are very volatile. If Bitcoin drops by 10%, altcoins can drop by 30-40%. In addition, many fake projects or 'scam' coins come to the market every day, in which there is a fear of losing everything if you invest money in them. Many altcoins disappear from the market forever after a few years.
In short, if Bitcoin is the "gold" of the crypto world, altcoins are like the "shares" of modern tech startup companies. Altcoins are a great place to be for those looking for technological innovation and high returns. However, to be successful here, you need deep research, patience, and a risk-taking mindset. It is wise to choose altcoins with a strong technical foundation rather than blindly chasing meme coins. Today's discussion concludes here. I hope you've found it interesting. Please share your thoughts on today's topic. Prayers for everyone. May everyone be well. Amen.
