What is a crypto wallet?
Assalamu Alaikum
One of the most important parts of the cryptocurrency world is the crypto wallet. Many people think that just like a wallet holds money, a crypto wallet might also hold Bitcoin or Ethereum. But in reality, its function is a bit different and much more modern.
Simply put, a crypto wallet is a software or physical device that helps you communicate with the cryptocurrency network and manage your digital assets. Your cryptocurrencies don't actually reside in the wallet. They reside on the blockchain network. The wallet simply holds the 'keys' to claim ownership of your assets on that blockchain and use them.
A crypto wallet basically works with two keys: one is the public key, which is like your bank account number. You can give it to anyone so they can send you crypto. It is a long alphanumeric address (e.g. 1BvBMSEYst...). Another is the private key, which is like your ATM PIN or password. Using it, you command the blockchain, "I want to send this asset to so-and-so." The person who has the private key is the real owner of the funds.
Wallets can be mainly divided into two categories based on the technology used. One is the hot wallet, these wallets are always connected to the internet. They are available as apps on your phone or PC (e.g. Trust Wallet, MetaMask). Wallets on exchanges like Binance or Coinbase. The advantage of this is that transactions can be made very quickly. The disadvantage is that the risk of hacking is slightly higher because they are on the internet. The other is the cold wallet, These are not connected to the internet, so they are called 'offline wallets'. A hardware wallet is a physical device that looks like a pen drive (e.g. Ledger, Trezor). A paper wallet is a QR code or code printed on paper. Its advantage is that it is highly secure because hackers cannot access offline devices. Its disadvantage is that it is expensive to buy and is somewhat inconvenient for quick transactions.
Your private key is held by someone else (such as an exchange). If you lose your password, they can recover it. Your key is only with you. No company takes control of your funds. If you lose your key, your money is lost forever.
When you open any crypto wallet, you are given 12 or 24 words. This is called the seed phrase. This is the 'master key' to your wallet. If your phone is lost or your wallet is deleted, you can recover all your assets by typing these words.
A crypto wallet is not just a place to store your assets, it is the key to the digital economy. It is wise to use a cold wallet if you are a long-term investor and a hot wallet if you trade regularly. Today's discussion concludes here. I hope you've found it interesting. Please share your thoughts on today's topic. Prayers for everyone. May everyone be well. Amen.
