What is a Seed Phrase and why is it so important?
Assalamu Alaikum
In the world of cryptocurrency, a seed phrase is the final frontier for securing your digital assets. It can simply be called a "master key" to your entire wallet. If you lose your wallet app or hardware device, this seed phrase is the only way you can get your money back.
A seed phrase is a list of 12 to 24 common English words arranged in a specific order. For example: apple, ocean, table, bright, winter... etc. Whenever you create a new crypto wallet (such as Trust Wallet, MetaMask or Ledger), the system allows you to write down these words. Behind the scenes, these words actually convert a very complex mathematical code or 'Private Key' into human-readable language. This method is called the BIP-39 Standard in cryptography.
If your mobile is stolen or your hardware wallet is broken, you can get all your coins (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) back by typing those 12/24 words on any new device. Without the seed phrase, your assets are lost forever. There is no central authority like a regular bank account or Facebook. If you lose your seed phrase, no company or hacker in the world can recover your wallet. Losing the seed phrase means your money is lost forever in the darkness of the blockchain. The blockchain considers the person who has the seed phrase to be the owner of those funds. If a hacker gets hold of these words, he can move all your assets to his wallet in an instant.
Since seed phrases are very sensitive, utmost care should be taken in storing them. Never save seed phrases in mobile notebooks, emails, drives or messengers. They can be hacked from anywhere with an internet connection. Write the words clearly with a pen on a good quality paper and keep it in a place where there is no fear of water or fire. Writing on paper can be erased over time. Therefore, many people engrave the words on stainless steel plates (such as Cryptosteel), which are not damaged even in fire or flood. Make at least two copies of the seed phrase and keep them in two separate safe places (such as your home and a bank locker). No exchange or wallet's 'customer support' will ever ask for your seed phrase. If someone asks for it, assume that they are a fraudster.
Many people mistake the wallet app password or PIN for the seed phrase. Password/PIN This is only used to open the app on your phone or laptop. It is useless if the phone is lost. The seed phrase is the foundation of the entire wallet. Even if the phone is lost, it is possible to get everything back with it.
There is a popular saying in the cryptocurrency world— "Not your keys, not your coins." If you do not have control over your seed phrase or if you lose it, you have no rights to your assets. So keep the seed phrase as the most important secret in your life. Today's discussion concludes here. I hope you've found it interesting. Please share your thoughts on today's topic. Prayers for everyone. May everyone be well. Amen.
