The Epistle to the Colossians was probably a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the Church in Colossae in Asia Minor. This is a short text that does not have great theological complexity, nor particular teachings of wisdom. The text aims to demonstrate that Christ is eternally coexistent with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and that all things were made by the love of God through him.
This letter most likely sought to combat the heresies that portray Jesus as a mere prophet or an angel of God. Christianity was still a religion in formation at that time, the first century after Christ, and many dubious teachers were bringing their doctrine to the different churches. It should be observed that the first written texts of the New Testament were the letters of the apostle Paul.
And Paul highlighted in the epistle themes such as baptism and the new man, most likely due to his personal experience as preacher of the Kingdom of God. When Apostle Paul founded the Church of Ephesus on his third missionary journey, he encountered disciples of John the Baptist who had received a baptism of repentance and were unfamiliar with the Holy Spirit. Paul baptized them, and the Holy Spirit miraculously descended upon them, according to the Book of Acts.
This is why, after announcing Jesus as the beginning, the first to rise from the dead, and the personification of God's perfections: "For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body" Colossians 2:9; Paul spoke of the change that baptism in the name of Jesus produces in believers, a baptism that brings with it the gift of hope, that is, the realization of the gift of eternal life. Because with the sacrament of baptism, a fundamental change occurs, men stop practicing error as a habit, and begin to live the spiritual gifts. This is why Paul wisely explained the following in his letter: "For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead" Colossians 2:12.
Through baptism, men ultimately die to the flesh and its works, and are reborn in the spirit to live a new life, the life of the children of God.
